Waipahu and Pearl City won’t be playing their home games on campus this football season.
The sacrifice is well worth it, though. Both the Marauders’ and Chargers’ football stadiums are getting major upgrades, with Fieldturf and eight-lane tracks that meet Hawaii High School Athletic Association standards.
Waipahu and Pearl City will play their home games at Aiea.
“It’s long overdue, but worth the wait,” Waipahu head coach Bryson Carvalho said. “They were waiting for the rail work to be finished (in the area) and it’s pretty much finished. We’re hoping, since it’s right off the freeway, that we will be able to host state tournament games (and track and field events).”
One of Waipahu’s home games will not be played at Aiea — homecoming against Kaimuki on Sept. 30, which will be televised on OC 16 and played at Mililani.
There is a small chance Pearl City may play its final home game at its own field, depending on if construction is done or not, according to Chargers head coach Robin Kami.
In addition, work is still being done on Radford’s field, so the Rams will play their home opener on Aug. 6 against ‘Iolani at Aiea instead. That game is part of a doubleheader that also includes McKinley vs. Pac-Five.
Radford first-year head coach Lon Passos said he’s hoping the field will be ready in time for the team’s second home game, Aug. 26 against Kaiser.
Someone from the OIA please explain to me how public schools are choose to upgrade facilities?? Also does success on and off the field play any role in determining this??
Wondering why defending State Champs Kahuku not getting new track and field turf? They DESERVE IT imo. As a Nanakuli fan….I’m wondering how the process is picked for schools?
