Kaiser took an early lead in the girls team standings after Thursday’s trials of the OIA track and field championships.
The two-time league champion Cougars scored 18 points after going 1-2 in the high jump at Mililani’s John Kauinana Stadium. Kristen O’Handley won after clearing 5 feet, 2 inches. Ginon Jones also cleared 5-2 and finished second based on the number of attempts.
O’Handley is the top qualifier in the 400-meter dash with a time of 59.19 seconds and was second in the 100 and 200.
Castle leads the boys team standings with 24 points after finishing 1-2-3 in the pole vault. William Ewaliko won after clearing 14 feet. Dalton Pahia was second at 13-6 and Taylor Bee cleared 12-6 to finish third.
Campbell’s Jonah Jessop set a meet record in the 300 hurdles with a time of 39.28, breaking Redmond Tutor’s mark of 39.44 from 2006.
Top qualifiers advanced to Saturday afternoon’s finals. Kalani’s Sione Vea threw 165 feet, 5 inches in the boys discus, the top mark in the state this season. Vea also leads the shot put with a throw of 49 feet. In field events, marks recorded in the trials carry over to the finals.
