Reydan “Tita” Ahuna received a promotion with a new title at Punahou, the school announced on Friday.
Ahuna is the new athletic director for middle school and coaches’ professional development. She joins Kale Ane and Jeff Meister as a third athletic director at the school. She was previously an athletics associate.
Ahuna is a former University of Hawaii volleyball star captain who won a Division I national title as a senior under head coach Dave Shoji in 1987. She also coached Hawaii Pacific to two NCAA Division II titles (1998 and 2000) and coached the Kamehameha boys volleyball team to two state championships (1991 and 1993). As a player for the Kamehameha girls team, she won state crowns in 1982 and 1983.
“I firmly believe the sports arena is a valuable extension of the student’s classroom,” Ahuna said in a news release. “Participating in athletics teaches meaningful life lessons, and I look forward to working collaboratively at Punahou to develop a solid foundation for student-athletes, particularly during the important transitional years between elementary school and high school.”
Ahuna has served in the Department of Education as an assistant principal at Kalakaua Middle School. She also held the post of senior women’s athletics administrator at Hawaii Pacific.
“I am pleased that Tita will assume this new athletic director position,” Punahou assistant principal James Kakos said in the release. “She brings passion and an exceptional balance of educational, administrative and athletics experience that will further our mission in supporting students.”
Ahuna was inducted into the UH Sports Circle of Honor in 2013.
