Moanalua is proud of its 10 straight Oahu Interscholastic Association golf championships, but some of the players want to get that ultimate prize, the state team title.
Na Menehune hasn’t done that since 2012, when the team’s current crop of seniors were in eighth grade.
“Every year, our main goal is to win the state championship,” said junior Jun Ho Won, the medalist in the OIA individual championship and a big part of the team crown that Moanalua captured on Tuesday on the Turtle Bay Fazio Course.
Moanalua had the top three individuals at the tournament — Won (5-under 139), Kyosuke Kevin Hara (140) and Shawn Lu (142).
“I think we feel like our team has grown a lot,” said Lu, a senior who played competitive golf six straight days (Thursday to Tuesday) and won the Mid-Pacific Open championship flight along the way. “This is our senior year. We have many seniors so we have a good chance at this (states). Hopefully, we can keep our heads down and just play well. Me and Kyosuke, Nicholas Nelson, Richard Johnson and Desmond Mello are seniors. The rest of the team, they have a couple more years. This is our last year, so we really want to go out with a bang, for sure.”
Moanalua has only won one state crown since the tournament’s inception in 1966. Punahou has won the last three state championships.
