Teniya Alo on her loss to Pearl City’s Netanya Kang in the 122-pound semifinals of the Chevron/Hawaii High School Athletic Association Wrestling Championships on Saturday at Blaisdell Arena:
“I just got cleared by my doctor two weeks ago, so I just started getting into the groove of wrestling and getting back into it. With people knowing I’m injured, I don’t know how that got out there, but people just are targeting my shoulder. I’m restricted and I don’t want to risk it. My mom always says if you don’t dominate, expect to lose and that’s exactly what I didn’t do. My fault. I gotta dominate next time. I feel like I got robbed with the penalty (one point to break a 2-2 tie, for pushing Kang out of bounds), but it doesn’t matter to me, I didn’t dominate. It’s my fault. I know I’ve got to train harder next time.”
Here is what Kang had to say after the win: “She’s the best in the state, nationals,” Kang said. “My coach just told me to give it my all. I’ve got nothing to lose. And that’s what I did. It’s awesome. I got the (winning) one (point) because she kept pushing me out. She got a technical for pushing me out.”
Concerning the final match against Waianae’s Tehani Carlson, Kang said, “I met her in the finals of the OIA. She got the best of me. We were tied and then I threw her and had her on her back and she rolled me over and she got the pin. So hopefully I’ll get back at it in the finals. Be hungry, it’s the heart, whoever has more heart.”
