(Some notes from days 2 and 3 of HIADA. Kahuku football and wrestling coach Reggie Torres on the second day of HIADA. Ran out of space in Saturday’s print edition.)
Torres, Kahuku’s football coach, acknowledged the edge.
“If you can get it, the bye helps, especially near the end of the season after you played physical teams like Farrington and Leilehua,” said Torres, who guided the Red Raiders to a state title last season. “Kids always want more games, but they don’t see the opportunity to heal from injuries. The bye gives us a chance to scout. But if it was to pass, everybody would just adjust to it.”
A proposal to add D-II to the cross country championships was rejected in committee, but will be up for vote today as a minority report.
The athletic directors’ passage of proposals today amount to little more than recommendations. The Hawaii High School Athletic Association executive board will then follow up this week by approving or rejecting the measures.
Here’s some extra info from day 3 regarding the expansion from 32 competitors from 26 in most track and field events.
ILH track official Jeff Meister clarified the proposal, noting that events like the pole vault and high jump do not have 26 or 32 participants. He moved to amend the proposal, then was informed by Gaison, the moderator, that as a non-voting member, he was not permitted to make a change.
Punahou AD Jeaney Garcia then made her only comment to the floor, a brief, efficient statement.
“I’d like to make an amendment to what Jeff just said,” she noted, and a ballroom full of administrators laughed heartily.
