It’s been a rollicking good time so far in the OIA Division I girls basketball final here at James Alegre Gymnasium.
Roosevelt leads at the half 20-18. Leilehua led 16-10 at one point, getting huge activity near the bucket by Tianna Hanohano and Chyel Palmer. Roosevelt tied the game with 3-pointers by Ciera Uchida and Alliya Gabriel. The Rough Riders also switched from man defense to a 2-3 zone and that really stumped the taller Mules.
THIRD QUARTER
It ends tied at 22. What a grind. Nobody hitting shots consistently. Keala Quinlan is settling for contested mid-range shots. Maybe she attacks the rim in the final quarter. We’ll see.
FOURTH QUARTER
Shaylee Todani’s 3 with :20 left forces overtime.
OVERTIME
In Coach Elroy Dumlao’s words, the Leilehua Mules have made history. They also shocked Roosevelt, getting a layup by Tianna Hanohano with 15 seconds left for a 32-31 win.
Ashley Kiko missed two foul shots with 8.5 seconds left that could’ve given Roosevelt the lead. After Tywanna Abbott missed a 1-and-1 with 4.8 seconds left, there was a scramble for the rebound and Roosevelt gained possession in the corner with 0.7 seconds left. Quinlan was able to get off a halfcourt shot after one dribble, but the shot caromed off the back iron and the Mules won.
