Box of Favorites: Punahou’s Ethan Lewis

Punahou senior Ethan Lewis, a water polo All-American, elite paddler and volleyball player, had plenty of favorites to share when he chatted with us recently. Here’s the full box of favorites; the abbreviated version ran with a feature story about Lewis in Tuesday’s Star-Advertiser (subscriber content).

Ethan Lewis
Height: 6 feet, 6 inches

Weight: 185

GPA: 3.6

Color: Royal Blue.

Movie: “Undercover Brother”. “It’s really funny. It’s clever.”

TV show: “How I Met Your Mother”. “It’s got a lot of plot twists.”
Music: 1990s rock. Blink 182. I” think the songs back then touch on things about childhood, stuff you think about. The music now is all kind of similar.”

Food (at home): Steak (medium rare), rice and tossed salad. “My grandfather (Peter Lewis) grills it. He actually lives next door, which is great. We’re at their house right now.”

Food (eating out): Asuka Nabe (Kaimuki). “I like the classic asuka broth with kal bi and pork.”

Class: AP Computer Science. “It requires a lot of out-of-the-box thinking, solving a lot of puzzles in really cool ways. I really enjoy it.”

Teacher: Alan Lum, second-grade teacher. “He’s really understanding of what an adolescent boy will be like, so he we learn in the best environment. There’s a lot of positive energy. Sometimes, he has us run around the basketball court. Once we’ve blown through all our energy, we can sit down. We come and we learn more effectively. It was cool to have a teacher who kind of got what it’s like to be a kid.”

Dream college: Claremont McKenna College (Los Angeles, Calif.). “I hope to play water polo there. I really like the team, the coach, the school. My brother (Oliver Lewis) goes to school at Stanford. I also have an aunt 35 miles from L.A.”

Dream major: Computer Science. “It’s kind of misunderstood. A lot of people are computer nerds and a lot are not. It helps your mind and your mindset going into a tough problem. I enjoy video games and having fun. When I take the class I understand the behind-the-scenes part of it.”

Dream career: “I don’t know. Who knows? As a kid, I always wanted to be an astronaut, but after watching some of these movies, I’ve kind of given up on that. Gravity. The Martian. It’s kind of cool, but it’s kind of scary, a lot can go wrong and the environment is unforgiving. Maybe when it gets safer and we understand space exploration more.”

Favorite Dad (Jeff Lewis) saying: “It’s not something he’s said, but he’s always taught me to do what you love doing. He’s an architect and he’s always loved those mathematical, geometric concepts. So I make sure I’m doing something because I enjoy it. If you’re not happy, find a way to be happy.”

Favorite Mom (Melissa Lewis) saying: “One thing she says is, ‘Think about the consequences of your actions.’ She always reminded me, you’d be surprised how your actions have a ripple effect on people, how I make them feel.’ I’m lucky to have my parents.”

Free time: “I really like to surf and body surf at Makapuu. It’s a relaxing time. It keeps my mind off whatever is on my shoulders.”

Surprise hobby: “I have three pugs. They’re my favorite things. Ginger, Daisy and Archie. Two girls and one boy. They’re 6, 5 and 3. They’re pretty hilarious and laid back. People think they’re the worst dog breed, really ugly, but I think they’re the best. They’re great.”

Does FaceTime work with dogs? I don’t know if that’ll work. I’ll see their reactions when I get to college.”
