‘Iolani’s Amanda Beaman is the 2015 Hawaii Gatorade girls cross country runner of the year, the Gatorade Company announced Thursday.
The award recognizes athletic excellence, academic achievement and exemplary character.
Beaman is now a finalist for the national runner of the year.
The 5-foot senior raced to an individual state championship on the 3-mile Seabury Hall course on Maui in 18 minutes, 26.7 seconds, leading the Raiders to a third-place finish as a team. She is a two-time Interscholastic League of Honolulu runner of the year, and won the most recent ILH championship race in 18:40.04.
In addition, Beaman was Hawaii’s fastest runner at the Foot Locker West Regional championships, crossing the line in 20:11.4.
Beaman has a 3.43 grade-point average and has volunteered locally on behalf of the Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children and the Therapeutic Horsemanship of Hawaii.
“Amanda Beaman is a strong cross country runner and is very knowledgeable about the sport,” ‘Iolani head coach Lauran Yard said. “She understands that it takes hard work and dedication in order to be successful in a sport like cross country. She has great focus, determination and work ethic, which has shown in her individual success during her high school cross country career.”
