Kato gets a light workout in Waipahu

Punahou’s Cameron Kato had no trouble at an OIA/ILH mini tournament at Waipahu on Saturday.

Kato, a defending state champion and ranked No. 3 in Hawaii Prep World’s pound-for-pound list, pinned both of his opponents before forfeiting his final match.

He drew a bye in his first match before stopping Ti-Jey Asano of Farrington and Kapolei’s Treyson Caniete. Ian Murakami of Pac-Five left with first place in the 126-pound class, though, because Kato left the gym before his showdown with Murakami to attend to a previous engagement, according to Punahou coach Yoshi Honda.

Kato beat Murakami 19-4 in the final at Officials last month. Murakami pinned Asano and beat Waipahu’s Mark Gallardo 10-0 to go undefeated on Saturday.

Three other state champions, Leilehua’s Liam Corbett, Kapolei’s Shandon Ilaban-Totten and Corey Cabanban of Saint Louis all showed up on Saturday but only two of them got to wrestle.

Corbett, HPW’s P4P No. 1, was forced to forfeit all three of his matches at 160 pounds because officials said he failed to shave in time. That allowed Punahou’s Mason Cananico to take the title over Waianae’s Devin Holcomb after pinning him in the first match. Corbett finished third.

Ilaban-Totten competed at 138 pounds and pinned both of his opponents. Cabanban won at 113 pounds after taking a tough match 7-4 over Kapolei’s Andre Pagurayan.

The boys were split, with the another group competing at Kamehameha. Iolani asserted its dominance yet again, with Jake Nakasone beating Kalani’s Draten Morisato and Elijah Diamond of Mililani to take the 120-pound class and Brian Pascua pinning Campbell’s Josh Gallarde at 152.

Damien’s Connor Villarmia won the 170-pound class but fellow state champ Triston Santos fell to Colby Watase of Iolani 6-4.
