Larry “Tui” Tuileta, who was the state’s best high school football and volleyball players, is seeking to join the University of Hawaii, according to the Star-Advertiser’s Stephen Tsai.
Tuileta requested — and secured — a release from USC this afternoon.
Tuileta has notified the UH volleyball coach Charlie Wade and football coach Nick Rolovich, according to people familiar with the situation.
Tuileta was the Honolulu Star-Advertser’s Offensive Player of the Year as a Punahou School senior quarterback in 2013. He led the Buffanblu to an 11-0 record and the 2013 state championship.
Tuileta also excelled in volleyball as an outside hitter, helping the Buffanblu win three consecutive state titles. He was named Volleyball Magazine’s 2014 national Player of the Year.
Tuileta also is one of the most accomplished volleyball players in club-level history. His Ka Ulukoa Club won age-group national titles for the 12s, 13s, 14s, 15s, 16s and 17s. He was named national tournament’s most valuable player for the 15s, 16s and 17s.
Tuileta finished his high school football career in 2013 with 6,962 passing yards, good for fifth all-time in the state of Hawaii with 77 touchdown passes and 19 interceptions and one state championship. His Buffanblu won the ILH all three years he was the quarterback.
Punahou won two of three state championships in boys volleyball with Tuileta on the roster and he is the only boy to have more than 10 kills in four straight state championship matches.
He was inducted into the Hall of Honor following his prep career. He is one of four boys to letter in football and volleyball to be elected to the Hall of Honor.
Punahou’s Micah Ma’a, Pasoni Tasini of Baldwin and Tye Perdido of Seabury Hall are the others.
