David Bayne is the new boys volleyball coach at Maryknoll, Spartans athletic director John Madriaga said Wednesday.

Maryknoll athletics also announced the hiring Wednesday afternoon on Twitter.

Bayne, who works as a counselor at Maryknoll, has been a head coach at St. Francis and at University. Most recently, he was the JV head coach and varsity assistant for the Junior Rainbows, and he’s been a coach in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu at various levels for 10 years.

“Having someone in-house, someone who knows the kids and someone who, as a counselor, will keep them on point during school is something positive,” Madriaga said. “We think he will do big things for us. He’s young and hungry.”

Bayne takes over for Sean Carney, who spent two years as the Spartans’ head coach and was hired in June to coach boys volleyball at ‘Iolani, his alma mater.

Bayne is a University of Hawaii graduate who got his Masters degree at Chaminade.
