A full slate of prep football to keep track of here in the control room, between Twitter updates, phone calls and OC16 after the Wahine volleyball match, we will try to keep you as up to the minute as we can while adding snippets of historical perspective.
Kaimuki and Waialua are already at the half over at Kaiser, and Billy Hull is live blogging Damien’s slim 6-3 lead over Pac-Five in the fourth quarter: http://www.hawaiiprepworld.com/football/live-blog-pac-five-vs-damien/
He will also live blog the big clash, No. 1 Punahou vs. No. 2 Saint Louis. I will add a link when he is ready to rumble, but until then check out his recent history of clashes between the top two teams in the Star-Advertiser’s poll: http://www.hawaiiprepworld.com/football/when-no-1-meets-no-2/
Paul Honda is out in Waianae for Kaiser’s trip to the other side of the island. His live blog is here: http://www.hawaiiprepworld.com/football/live-blog-kaiser-at-no-7-waianae/

And away we go…
Brian McInnis is over in Waipahu for homecoming, scheduling Kahuku might not have been the smartest idea but it will be a party nontheless.
To get us in the mood, here is a list of All-State players from Waipahu over the years: Ben Apuna, Chad Cuban, Jon Kamaka, Troy Matautia, Michael Moody, Andrew Moody, Gary Page, Danny Poti, Alvin Takeshita, Peter Viliamu, Falaniko Vitale. Drag a few of those guys out of the stands and put them on the field and Kahuku might have a little trouble.
7:51: Jason Kaneshiro and Paul Honda could probably have a pretty good fistfight if we could get them to argue about who has the best sunset tonight. Mr. Honda is over in Waianae and Mr. Kaneshiro is at Kamehameha, where Kumoku Noa 55 yd pass from Justice Young. PAT good. Kamehameha up 14-3, 9:40 2nd qtr.
7:54: And the first stretcher of the night makes an appearance in Kaiser. It appears a Waialua player took a knee to the head and is being loaded up on the ambulance, which got to the field in nearly 10 minutes to break last Thursday’s “record” of 12 minutes on Thursday night at the Stadium. I have always wondered why there is not an ambulance at every game and was always told that there are not enough ambulances on the island, but I have never asked anyone official. It does bring to mind the clip on the right from the 1960s, though.
The injury is going to cost Waialua another player, too, as one of the boys leaves to go to the hospital with his mate. Kaimuki leads 14-6 in the third quarter and play has resumed in front of a somber crowd.
8:08: Billy Hull‘s live blog is up from the stadium: http://www.hawaiiprepworld.com/football/live-blog-no-2-punahou-vs-no-1-saint-louis/
Damien’s Shawn Borges had the game of the night, and the night hasn’t even begun. He blocked three field goals sealed the game with the INT in end zone.
8:10: First play after the break Kaimuki threw for a 39 yard touchdown but they ruled it an illegal man downfield so they called it back. And then another Waialua player is down, but he hobbles off and the ambulance can keep heading toward the hospital rather than turning around.
8:12: Keoni-Kordell Makekau 29 yd TD reception from Tai-John Mizutani for ‘Iolani. PAT failed. Kamehameha leads 28-9, 4:18 2nd qtr. With all of the great receivers in the ILH, coaches are going to have some tough choices for the all league team. If they select Makekau first team again, he will be the first Iolani player to ever receive first-team honors three years in a row.
8:13: Nanakuli in the board with a safety, 2-0 over Pearl City in the first quarter. Kamehameha-Hawaii leads Konawaena 7-0 after one quarter.
8:15: Nick Kapule starts at QB for Punahou and his first pass of the game is picked off by Ronson Timbreza. Start the Ephraim watch!
8:16: I’d list all of Waianae’s all-state first teamers for its homecoming, but the list might be longer than the internet allows. Rich history over there.
8:18: Nainoa Banks plunges over from four yards out and Nanakuli leads Pearl City 10-0
8:20: If you like moving pictures, you might be able to find your game at this nifty site: http://thecube.com/explore/football
8:24: Harmon Brown covers 48 yards on Kahuku’s first play from scrimmage and soon runs in for a 20-yard score as Red Raiders lead Waipahu 7-0.
8:27: Kaimuki scores again, Green Bulldogs lead Red Bulldogs 20-6 with 4 minutes left in the third. Kapolei and Farrington kick off before 8:30!
8:29: Molokai 87, Hana 14 in eight man football. And to think Oahu fans are calling for 8-man to cut down on blowouts…
8:30: Kamehameha 28, ‘Iolani 9 halftime. Kamehameha QB Justice Young 20-36-0-297, 3 TDs. Kumoku Noa 8 catches, 144, 3 TD.
8:34: Speaking of blowouts, Waianae has already scored twice on Kaiser. The Seariders have already put 90 up on McKinley, 69 on Waipahu and 50 on Leilehua without even trying.
8:35: Kesi Ah-Hoy follows his blockers in for an easy 5-yard score and it’s 14-0 Kahuku near the end of the 1Q. Waipahu no match up front.
8:38: Nick Abramo reports that Mililani will be without Kalakaua Timoteo tomorrow. The Trojans might need him against stout Kailua.
8:41: Kahuku’s Keala Santiago returns a Blaise De Asis interception 45 yards for a lightning-fast score and it’s 21-0 Raiders at the end of 1Q
8:45: Jacob Tobias 37-yard field goal is good. Punahou 3, Saint Louis 3, 0:18, Q1.
8:47: Kapolei is probably known more for boys soccer than anything else. Kapolei 3, Farrington 0; Beau Meyer 28 FG
9:03: Kahuku starting QB Kesi Ah-Hoy limps off with what looked like a sprain. Backup Cameron Renaud enters and promptly runs in for 6-yd TD. 35-0
9:05: Kapolei 10, Farrington 0; Jaymin Sarono 3 pass from Taulia Tagovailoa
9:10: Kamehameha DB Kainalu Martin returns an interception 57 yards for a TD. PAT good. Warriors up 42-9, 6:29 3rd qtr.
9:16: Pearl City came back somehow, I was away from the desk. Chargers 20, Golden Hawks 10, second quarter.
9:19: Jahres Silofau 7-yard TD run. Saint Louis 17, Punahou 10, 3:20, Q2.
9:20: Waialua scores on a pass play, they trail 26-19 with about a minute left and an onsides kick coming.
9:21: Iolani scores on Brian Pascua‘s 1 yd run. Kamehameha answers with a Kanoa Shannon 1 yd TD run. Warriors lead 49-15, :50 3rd qtr. Kamehameha’s 49 points is already the third most they have scored in their long history with Iolani. Tops is 55 in a win in 2011 followed by 51 in 2004.
9:22: Waialua gets the onsides kick at the 50. They have the ball with 1:19 left. This should be interesting.
9:24: Kapolei 16, Farrington 0; L.J. Esperas 4 run; xp hits left upright. How about those Hurricanes? They have never beat the Governors in their short existence.
9:25: Isaac Slade-Matautia with a HUGE block on the punt and StL recovers on the Punahou 19 with 1:53 left in half.
9:25: Waialua QB hobbles off with the ball on the 36 and 14.9 seconds to go.
9:27: UH-oh. Tua Tagovailoa rolls out to his left and fires and is down on the field. This doesn’t look good. Hush falls over Aloha Stadium. For all of the pie-in-the-sky talk about a super conference involving the best of the ILH and the best of the OIA, it is tough enough for teams to keep a quarterback healthy just in league play. Billy Hull says it doesn’t look good for Tua, he went down without contact, it seems. That doesn’t bode well.
9:29: Kaimuki comes up with a game-saving sack on the new Waialua quarterback and wins 26-19. Kaimuki avenges a loss from last year.
9:33: Chevan Cordeiros is in and escapes trouble and buys time to find Drew Kobayashi for a 16-yard TD. Crusaders lead 24-10, 1:26, Q2.
9:35: It is not limited to Oahu. While McKinley celebrates homecoming, King Kekaulike and Maui announce that King K doesn’t have enough players and will not play tomorrow.
9:39: Keala Martinson goes high to make a catch and then I think just got his foot in. What a catch. 15-yard TD with 9 seconds left. StL 24-17.
9:40: Kapolei and Farrington go into halftime with the Hurricanes leading 16-0. It is way too early for this, but Farrington has not been shut out since 2011. The Hurricanes shut out three teams last year, so we know they have got it in them. The scary thing is I think they are doing it without Ezra Savea, who was their best defender the last time I saw them on OC16.
9:43: And there it is. Fatu Sua-Godinet scores on a 43-yd reception from Brett Yap. PAT good. Kamehameha leads 56-21, 8:00 4th. They have been over 55 points only six times since 1973, and this is the most points they have scored on Iolani. And just like that, miscue on ‘Iolani punt attempt gives Kamehameha the ball at the 6. Brayden Miyamoto scores. Warriors 63-21, 4:37 4th. The most points for a Kamehameha team in the Prep Bowl era is 76 against Pac-Five last year. The quarterback in that game? Noah Sua-Godinet. He has now been under center in three of the six times the team has scored more than 62 points.
9:49: Of course we have to look at the other side. Iolani has given up more than 60 twice, the largest was a 77-point game given up to Saint Louis in 1998. The Raiders actually scored 42 in that game with Joe Igber rushing for 204 yards.
9:52: Harmon Brown beasts his way into the end zone from 58 yards (third TD) and it’s 49-0 Kahuku over Waipahu. Waipahu record for points allowed is 68 against Campbell in 2011. People have whispered it, but let’s just say it. The new format for the OIA doesn’t work. If you have to have mismatches like this, at least let them be rivalry games.
9:55: Kamehameha goes final with a 63-21 win over Iolani, the Warriors get Punahou next. Wendell Look has got to be disappointed, they are better than they have showed. Or maybe he will just say ‘I told you so,’ since playing the big boys once a month is a lot different from playing them every week.
9:57: Banks with a TD pass to Momoa and Nanakuli closes to within 20-18 in the third quarter. Still time to get to the yard, Pearl City folks.
9:58: Cordeiro warming up on the Saint Louis sideline. No sign of Tua. This could become the battle of the backups. But they are a couple of really good backups. NO! Tua does his best Willis Reed and takes the field!
10:00: Kapolei is looking good, but I haven’t seen the Governor yet who can handle a Hurricane. Ba-dum-bum.
10:06: Kahuku runs it to 56-0 over Waipahu. The Red Radiders have scored 159 points the last three times they have played the Marauders and given up only 16.
10:07: Leelan Oasay 6-yard TD pass from Tua Tagovailoa. Saint Louis 31, Punahou 17, 8:13, Q3.
10:15: Kahuku up 63-0 on an 82-yard interception return by Hirkley Latu early in the fourth quarter. With Mililani’s offensive machine, the zero is more important than the 63 if you want to look ahead to the game everybody wants to see.
10:17: Hawktime! 49yd TD pass from Banks to I. Wong-Lonzanida. Nanakuli 25, Pearl City 20 in the third.
10:18: Wayne Taulapapa (20 carries, 77 yards, 2 TD) scores on a 2-yard TD run. Saint Louis 31, Punahou 24, 3:18, Q3.
10:19: Kingston Moses-Sanchez comes up with a 79 yard score from Bishop Rapoza and Farrington is on the board and in the game all at once. If they ever thought of having Darren Hernandez do the game for OC16 from the sideline, that play was a good argument against it. I am sure there was some colorful language on the Kapolei sideline during that play. Two minutes left in the third, turn on the television if you haven’t already. This is coming down to the end. Kapolei 16, Farrington 6. Please keep running your offense, Kapolei, there is too much time left.
10:20: Final: Kahuku 63, Waipahu 0. The Red Raiders have not been held under 27 all year and given up just 22 points in seven games. They get Waianae next week at the stadium.
10:26: Pearl City comes right back, takes a 28-25 lead with 9:40 left. The Chargers are good and all, but I think that drive brings into question how good Nanakuli’s defense is.
10:29: No. 1 Saint Louis 31, No. 2 Punahou 24, End 3. Isaiah Tufaga picks off a Kapule pass late in the third quarter. The ILH’s leading passer is having a tough go of it.
10:31: Speaking of Waianae, they lead Kaiser 40-27 in the third and have held the great Jensen McDaniel to 117 yards. Yes, held.
10:36: Keala Martinson with a 51-yard TD pass from Nick Kapule after a Tagovailoa INT and we’re tied 31-31 with 10:24 left in regulation.
10:42: Nanakuli comes back yet again. Golden Hawks 31, Chargers 28 in the fourth.
10:43: Tua Tagovailoa with an 8-yard TD run after a 53-yard pass to Lanakila Wilson that was clearly dropped. Saint Louis 38, Punahou 31, 9:39, Q4. Curtis Murayama wants to know if this is the most points in a game by two lefty QBs. The engine knows a lot, but not that.
10:45: Jonathan Tana Liana goes high for an interception for Kapolei and Farrington is in serious trouble, or as much trouble as you can be in a league where the playoffs are assured by showing up. Hurricanes lead 16-6 and have the ball with three minutes left.
It looks like the tiers in the OIA Blue are pretty much set going into the last week. A—Mililani and Kailua. B—Farrington and Kapolei. C—Moanalua and Campbell with Aiea on the outside.
10:52: Pearl City scores again, lead Nanakuli 34-31 with 30 seconds left. What an amazing game, we will be looking back on this one when the playoffs roll around. Maybe it will be rebroadcasted.
10:55: Long interception return (85 yards) by Kapolei seals it for the Hurricanes over the Governors. It’s the first win for the program over Farrington
It seems like Hernandez has done everything at least once in his coaching career, but this is the first time he has beaten Randall Okimoto. Hernandez owned Skippa Diaz in his Campbell days, going 3-0-1 and lost his only meeting against Harold Tanaka. He was 0-6 against Okimoto before tonight, all of those with Kapolei.
And it is final. Kapolei 23, Farrington 6.
11:09: Nanakuli is in overtime with Pearl City, leading 41-34. Incredible. I switched the TV over just in time to see Nanakuli pick off a pass to end it. These teams will meet again, they have to. It’s fate. They played overtime last year with Nanakuli winning by a point for the OIA title.
That leaves us with just the Punahou-Saint Louis thriller, they are in OT as well. Let’s see what a tie would do to the ILH office.
Anyway, I am closing this down for the week, check out Billy’s blog for the ending of the ILH game. I leave you with this to chew on as you get hyped for tomorrow’s action including Mililani vs. Kailua. The face might not look familiar, but the name will: Rod York
Look may love to play in D2, but this DIDN’T prove that that’s where Iolani belongs. They had a bad game. Will it happen in ALL of their next four games? I doubt it.
Not to mention many of KSK’s late scores came late and courtesy of Iolani turnovers.
