Punahou running back Wayne Taulapapa gave his oral commitment to BYU on Tuesday, according to Rivals.com.
Taulapapa, who is 5 feet 11 and 202 pounds, has rushed for 558 yards and eight TDs while playing in five games for No. 2 Punahou (5-0, 2-0 Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I) this season. As a junior in 2014, Taulapapa rushed for 1,131 yards and 20 TDs in nine games. In his sophomore year, when the Buffanblu won the Division I state championship, Taulapapa rushed for 1,006 yards and 14 TDs.
Taulapapa also has offers from Hawaii, Colorado and UNLV. He and his team are preparing for a big showdown on Friday at 8 p.m. at Aloha Stadium against top-ranked Saint Louis (4-0, 2-0 ILH D-I).
The Cougars’ recruting point man for Taulapapa was assistant coach Mark Atuaia, the former Kahuku and BYU running back.
It’s not certain if Taulapapa plans on going on a two-year mission with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, as is common among BYU recruits.
