Junior quarterback Tua Tagovailoa missed No. 1 Saint Louis’ last game with a right calf sprain, and the Crusaders (4-0, 2-0 Interscholastic League of Honolulu) are reporting the good news that he will be ready to play in Friday’s showdown of unbeatens against Punahou.
“He’s good to go,” Saint Louis head coach Cal Lee texted Hawaii Prep World on Wednesday.
Tagovailoa suffered the injury in the Crusaders’ 31-27 victory over Kamehameha on Sept. 12. He sat out the 28-17 win over ‘Iolani last Friday.
In Tagovailoa’s place, sophomore Chevan Cordeiro went 24-for-31 for 259 yards and a touchdown against ‘Iolani. He’s played in all four games, including three as Tagovailoa’s backup, and is 36-for-44 for 376 yards with no interceptions and four TDs overall.
In three games, Tagovailoa has gone 51-for-77 for 744 yards, 10 TDs and one interception. He has also rushed for 155 yards and two TDs.
Hawaii Prep World is working on getting an update from Punahou coach Kale Ane on the second-ranked Buffanblu’s quarterback situation. Since starter Ephraim Tuliloa suffered a shoulder strain two weeks ago in the first quarter against ‘Iolani, junior Nick Kapule has played every snap at the position and threw for 326 yards and three touchdowns in a 28-17 comeback victory over No. 5 Kamehameha last Friday. The Buffanblu trailed 17-7 at halftime.
Tuliloa has not practiced and has been receiving treatment, according to a source close to the Buffanblu (5-0, 2-0), but it’s possible he may practice Wednesday. If so, he is likely to see action (either as a starer or backup) against Saint Louis, the source said.
Kapule, who is a southpaw like Tuliloa, has done an admirable job in Tuliloa’s place. For the season, Kapule is 50-for-82 for 853 yards, nine touchdowns and one interception. Tuliloa is 39-for-66 for 518 yards, eight touchdowns and two intercpetions. Both have appeared in four games.
Punahou sophomore Stephen Barber is also a capable quarterback. He is 5-for-6 for 46 yards and no interceptions in four games.
Friday’s Saint Louis vs. Punahou game is 8 p.m. at Aloha Stadium.
