If the Saint Louis-Kamehameha game last weekend is any indication of how the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I football season will go, it’s going to be a rip-roaring campaign.

The top-ranked Crusaders (3-0, 1-0) just got by No. 5 Kamehameha, 31-27 on Saturday at Aloha Stadium.

Saint Louis head coach Cal Lee was relieved when it was over.

“We expected a tough game and that’s what it was,” he said. “We were fortunate to hang on and get the win. That’s the league. There are no softies.”

The ILH’s marquee matchup this Friday at 8 p.m. at Aloha Stadium pits No. 2 Punahou (4-0, 1-0), which has been to the Division I state final four years in a row, against Kamehameha (3-1, 0-1). If another close game ensues, all bets are off for an early favorite to emerge as the league champ.

The Crusaders (3-0, 1-0) meet ‘Iolani (2-2, 0-1) in the 5 p.m. game at Aloha Stadium.

In ILH Division II, a big night looms on Saturday, when Damien (3-0, 0-0) meets St. Francis (2-3, 0-1) at 6 p.m. at Roosevelt’s Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium.

Since D-II power ‘Iolani moved up to D-I this season, there is a power vacuum at the lower level, and there are three teams looking to overtake the Raiders’ mantle. Pac-Five (3-0, 1-0) took the early edge with a 29-18 win over the Saints last week. Now it’s the Monarchs and Saints who are looking to get a leg up on each other.
