Got here to John Kauinana Stadium for the varsity scrimmage… and turns out they started it at 6:30 p.m. instead of 7:30. The JV scrimmage got cut short, I’m told.

In this scrimmage, the scoreboard is running and the format is game-like at 12 minutes per quarter. Mililani is up 34-7 with less than 4 minutes left in the second quarter. McKenzie Milton just drove his offensive unit roughly 50 yards for a TD, throwing a 4-yard TD pass to (I think) Kalakaua Timoteo. Mililani is wearing yellow practice jerseys; no numbers for this scrimmage. Leilehua is wearing game uniforms (dark green).

That will probably be it for Milton. Forty-one points in one half of work is a good night’s work. No kickoffs but they are using punts and a player for Leilehua got hurt on punt coverage a few moments ago.

I’m curious to see how Leilehua’s new hybrid spread offense (use a TE, no RB) looks. Right now, they’re using a single RB set.

There are more fans here than there were at Kapolei. My guess is Kapolei and Saint Louis drew about 1,000. Here at Kauinana Stadium, the Mililani bleachers are about two-thirds full and the visitors’ side is less than half. Probably around 2,000 to 2,500. And as Nick Abramo pointed out earlier in the week, no gate revenue because it’s a scrimmage. Concession stand is probably banging, though. Hard to top Mililani’s tasty morsels.

The Mules drove deep into Mililani territory late in the half, but were stopped at the 2-yard line on an untimed down — after a roughing-the-passer penalty. QB keeper stuffed.

Leilehua opens the second half in a five-wide set and is having some success — if not for a penalty. Now Mililani has scored on a turnover in the backfield. Run back for a TD by… sorry, no jersey numbers. Trojans lead 48-7. PK has a strong leg.

Trojans come up with another turnover. Deflected post pass and a diving pick by a MIL DB. Sorry, no number. Heckuva play.

Milton long gone, as expected.

Leilehua with a nice drive. No. 12 to No. 3 in the flat, and he goes 12 yards, going high over a tackler with an airborne flip into the end zone for the TD. 48-14, running clock and down to less than 6 minutes left in the scrimmage. (I almost typed “game.”)
