Kealakehe alumnus David Fangupo gave an oral commitment to play football at Utah in 2016, according to a report on BigIslandNow.com
Fangupo, who is 6 feet 2 and 325 pounds, was a two-way lineman and a fullback for the Waveriders. He was a two-time All-Big Island Interscholastic Federation first-team selection and played one season at Cerritos College.
A year ago, Fangupo made 33 tackles with two sacks as a defensive tackle for the Falcons.
In February 2013, Rick Reilly of ESPN.com wrote a story about Fangupo’s ball-carrying ability after watching a YouTube clip of the massive player bowling over people from his fullback position with unusual speed and agility for someone that size during the 2012 season. You can read that story here: http://espn.go.com/espn/story/_/id/8951167/reilly-big-hawaiian-running-back-david-fangupo.
The clip of Fangupo from his senior season that Reilly watched is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qxrTIU7VbyM.
According to the news report, Fangupo — who graduated from Kealakehe in 2013 — is undecided on whether he wants to play one more season for Cerritos this fall before transferring to the Utes next fall.
Francesca Weems, Sportscaster and Reporter, Hawaii News Now, interviewed Fangupo as a guest co-host on the Bobby Curran Radio Talk Show at least a week ago when he announced he would be committing to Utah. He explained that Utah has a long history of developing defensive line players that have made it to the NFL. It is his dream to play in the NFL so Utah was a logical choice after carefully considering all options.
