Don Botelho is retiring from his post as ILH executive director, according to an email from league board chair Suzy Travis to the ILH principals, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser learned Wednesday.
Botelho took over the top spot in the league in 2003.
Botelho will be around the league offices to mentor his replacement. The replacement is not known at this time.
“Don Botelho is transitioning from his post as ILH executive director,” Travis, the Assets School principal, wrote in the email. “Over the next several months, Don will be working with the league to first mentor an interim executive director and then his permanent successor. In the meantime, the ILH Office is carrying out his duties.”
Botelho, who will be 83 on June 13, who was the athletic director at Damien from 1967 to 1974 and at Mid-Pacific from 1974 to 2002, won two Prep Bowl titles as the Pac-Five football coach in 1982 and 1985.
Botelho started the Damien football program in 1965 and coached there for nine years before taking over the Wolfpack. He was also an assistant coach at the University of Hawaii for four years in the early 1960s.
Botelho also played for the UH team that beat Nebraska 6-0 in 1955. He was a quarterback and a place-kicker in his career for the Rainbow Warriors. He missed an extra point in that big game, the only miss of his career.
Botelho has served in the post of state football coordinator for the HHSAA.
