Baldwin was without its head coach in a 7-6 loss to Campbell in the state softball quarterfinals on Wednesday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Four assistants combined to take over for Steve Morton after he was relieved of his duties last week.
Earlier this week, Baldwin athletic director Kahai Shishido, citing the Department of Education’s personnel privacy policy, did not confirm that Morton was fired, as was reported by the Maui News.
Several Baldwin parents who did not want to be named said Wednesday that Morton texted the Bears players with messages that were construed as “cyber bullying” and that Morton had been warned once before.
Last week, Morton told the Maui News that he was fired and that it was because he texted a message to the players that asked, in effect, why the team should go to states if they can’t stop bickering among themselves.
After the loss to Campbell, Baldwin shortstop Nawai Kaupe was asked for her take on not having the head coach around for the states, but she did not want to discuss the controversy.
She did say, however, that Morton was a good coach.
The Bears play in a consolation game Thursday at 11 a.m.
