Jayson Pagurayan’s shot at a second-straight OIA judo title is looking likely.
Pagurayan, of Kapolei, beat Taylor Otsuka of Mililani to win the OIA West on Saturday, setting himself up for next week’s OIA championships.
Pagurayan won the OIA last year but finished second to Punahou’s Cameron Kato at states. He could become the first boy to repeat at that weight class since Kelson Onigama of Moanalua in 2010-11.
His brother, Andre Pagurayan, won the OIA West title at 114 pounds and they were joined by Kapolei teammates Anthony Brett (121), Kaulana Narciso (132) and Rodman Salangdron (145) as division champions.
Othewr titleists were Paxton Horiuchi of Mililani (161), Harley Oshiro of Aiea (178), Pearl City’s Maui Lee (198) and Jackson Fuamatu (220) and Matt Miner of Aiea (285).
Pearl City had five champions on the girls side with Adrienne Nazareno (98 pounds), Louise Pekelo (103) and Mikayla Abe (109) sweeping the lower weights.
Kayelah Arakaki won at 139 pounds for the Chargers and Mana Borden won at 172.
Other winners were Kaylin Castro of Mililani at 115 pounds and teammate Halie Shinsato at 122, Sarah Murallos of Leilehua at 129, Aiea’s Kari Okubo at 154 and fellow Na Alii Sarah Miner at 220.
