Kaiser’s Lisa Tashiro was named the Gatorade Hawaii Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year on Thursday.
Tashiro, a junior, raced to the girls state championship with a 3-mile time of 18 minutes, 59.9 seconds last fall at Central Oahu Regional Park. As a team, the Cougars finished second.
At the ‘Iolani Invitational, Tashiro was the first Hawaii girl to cross the finish line, in 17:42.4.
Tashiro has a 3.87 grade-point average and is a member of her school’s Key Club. She has also volunteered with Special Olympics and UNICEF.
“Lisa Tashiro is fairly new to the sport of distance running but she has already accomplished much and done everything we have asked her to do,” Kaiser coach Dennis Swart said in a news release. “She’s a very hard worker who will only continue to get better as she focuses on her running.”
The Gatorade award recognizes “outstanding athletic excellence, high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character.”
