Final: ‘Iolani 46, Kamehameha 43
Kainoa Chu’s 3-pointer with 5 seconds left broke a 43-all tie and gave the Raiders their first state title since 2006.
Chu finished with 27 points, including five 3-pointers, to lead ‘Iolani (20-7), the Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion and top seed.
Micah Christenson had 23 points and 11 rebounds for defending state champion Kamehameha (26-7).
Third place: Punahou 58, Kahuku 56
DeForest Buckner’s tip-in with 9 seconds left lifted the Buffanblu.
His go-ahead basket, off a missed layup by James Dowsett, was followed by a quick inbounds pass by Kahuku to Sage Kaka, who dribbled the length of the court and missed a tough hanging layup try with 3 seconds left. There was no call on a collision in front of the basket as the ball went loose off the rim, and time expired.
Buckner, a 6-foot-7 sophomore, had 15 points, six boards and four blocks to lead third-ranked Punahou (24-4). Kaiwi Crabb added 11 points and Matt Feldman tallied eight points.
Nehoa Akina led fifth-ranked Kahuku (19-12) with 22 points. Shairone Thompson added 13 points and seven boards, and Hans Brown added nine points.
The Buffanblu raced to an 11-0 lead, but Kahuku rallied and kept it close. The Red Raiders were within 41-35 entering the final quarter when Punahou reserve center Kaiwi Crabb hit a 3-pointer.
Punahou stuck with an all-senior five on the floor in the second half until the final 3 minutes, when sophomore DeForest Buckner replaced Crabb. Buckner scored off a feed from James Dowsett to give Punahou a 56-52 lead, but the Red Raiders rallied again.
Shairone Thompson’s steal and layup tied it at 56 with a minute remaining.
The Buffanblu shot 39 percent from the field (22-for-56) and overcame 12-for-24 shooting from the line.
The Red Raiders shot 37 percent from the field against Punahou’s man-to-man defense (19-for-51) and 16-for-22 from the line (73 percent). Kahuku had 21 turnovers to Punahou’s 17.
The teams were even on the boards with 37 each.
Fifth place: Mililani 71, Moanalua 67, OT
Edward Ocampo scored 21 points and Reginald “R.J.” Griffin scored 20, including four free throws in the final 31 seconds of overtime, to lift the Trojans.
Ocampo shot 8-for-13, including 3-for-5 from the arc. Griffin shot 6-for-14, also hitting 3-for-5 from deep.
Hassan Richardson added 10 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks, and Everett Kahoano tallied seven points and nine caroms.
Marcus Monroe led Moanalua with 27 points (9-for-25) and 17 boards. Marcus Keene added 14 points, but turned the ball over six times.
Richardson’s two-handed fastbreak slam closed out the first quarter, capping a mini-rally by the Trojans. They led 37-36 at the break.
Mililani turnovers helped Moanalua take a 48-40 lead midway through the third.
The Trojans pulled within two, but Monroe hit a trey from the corner and another from the wing as Moanalua opened the lead to 57-49. Monroe’s breakaway dunk lifted Na Menehune to a 10-point lead, but Griffin swished a 3-pointer and scored on a traditional three-point play, off a pass from Edward Ocampo, to bring Mililani within 59-55.
After Griffin and Ocampo scored on fastbreak drives, the game was tied at 59.
The Trojans led 64-61 after a putback by Ocampo, but Monroe answered with a corner try to tie it with 50 seconds left.
Ocampo missed on a baseline drive, but Moanalua guard Marcus Keene missed a 17-footer with 5 seconds left, and Reece Racoma’s 22-footer at the buzzer was short, sending the game into overtime.
The game was tied at 67 with 31 seconds left when Griffin swished two foul shots. After a Moanalua turnover, Griffin hit two more free throws for a 71-67 lead with 19 seconds left. Moanalua missed a torrent of shots in the final seconds, but didn’t score again.
Mililani shot 46 percent (27-for-59) from the field and hit 10-for-16 at the foul line.
Moanalua shot just 31 percent (25-for-80) from the field and 10-for-17 from the line. Moanalua outrebounded Mililani 52-39, grabbing 29 offensive boards.
The Trojans committed 27 turnovers. Moanalua had 22.
Sixth-ranked Mililani, the third-place team in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red Conference, closed the season 22-7. Second-ranked Moanalua, the OIA champion, finished 24-7.
