RUNNING BACKS
1. Vavae Malepeai, Mililani >> Pupule rating: 98
6-0, 200, Jr.
∆∆ vs #3 Saint Louis Aug 16 rush 25-112, 2 TD (2,2) rec 1-15
∆∆ vs Kailua Aug 23 rush 9-80, 3 TD (2,22,6), 2-pt run rec 0-0

∆∆ @ #6 Campbell Sept 19 rush 29-145, 2 TD (2,9), 2-pt run rec 1-6
∆∆ vs #3 Farrington Sept 27 rush 22-199, 4 TD (41,9,8,3) rec 0-0
∆∆ Total rush 113-767, 15 TD; 6.8 YPC; 127.8 YPG
2-pt run
rec 5-51, TD; 10.2 YPR; 8.4 YPG
Extra point: After a meager 37 carries in his previous three games, the past two weeks have been big doses of Malepeai left, right and up the gut. His 51 carries (for 344 yards and six TDs) is the most work he’s had in back-to-back games since 2013. The good news is that he’s fresh, still below last season’s workload at this point. A 41-yard TD run against Farrington, corralled near the left sideline, twisting out of a tackle and changing direction to the right pylon, may have been the best TD run by a RB this year.
2. Ranan Mamiya, Farrington >> Pupule rating: 97
5-11, 170, Sr.
∆∆ vs Waipahu (Aloha) Aug 16 rush 4-124, 3 TD (25,61,31)

PASS – TD
Extra point: The Trojans negated Mamiya’s threat as a kickoff returner by having PK Marc Matas boom five touchbacks. Since the Trojans punted only once, Mamiya was not a factor in the return game at all. The Govs threw the ball his way three times, including a sensational 80-yard TD on the first play of their first series, but for the most part, Mililani kept Mamiya under wraps.
3. (tie) Jensen McDaniel, Kaiser >> Pupule rating: 96
Jr.
∆∆ vs Aiea Aug 15 rush 24-162, 4 TD (70,2,1,1) rec 3-29
∆∆ vs Waianae Aug 22 rush 22-159, TD (76) rec 1-8
∆∆ vs Waipahu Sept 5 rush 14-162, 2 TD (52,43) rec 1-34
∆∆ vs McKinley Sept 12 rush 12-88, 5 TD (12,5,4,8,10) rec 7-62
∆∆ vs #3 Kahuku Sept 19 rush 28-98 rec 3-99, TD (87)
∆∆ @ Castle Sept 26 rush 24-83, TD (24) rec 3-16
∆∆ Total rush 124-752, 13 TD; 6 YPC; 125.3 YPG
rec 18-248, TD; 13.8 YPR; 41.3 YPG
Extra point: Castle became the first unranked team to limit McDaniel to less than less than 6 yards per carry, which set up a near upset of the newly ranked Cougars. In lieu of a deeply layered passing attack, the onus is on McDaniel and QB Kalawai‘a Judd to move the chains, and they do it especially well on the ground.
3. (tie) Wayne Taulapapa, Punahou >> Pupule rating: 96
5-11, 185, Jr.
∆∆ vs #7 Saint Louis (Aloha) Aug 29 rush 15-161 rec 3-21
∆∆ vs Damien (Aloha) Sept 5 rush 11-57, 2 TD (13,1) rec 0-0
∆∆ vs St. Francis Sept 13 rush 6-153, 3 TD (9,63,6) rec 1-10
∆∆ vs ‘Iolani Sept 27 rush 8-77, 4 TD (9,43,3,2) rec 2-19
∆∆ Total rush 40-448, 9 TD; 11.2 YPC; 112 YPG
rec 6-50
Extra point: Forty carries. It’s October and one of the top RBs in the state has been handed the ball just 40 times, along with six passes. From a fun-times aspect, no kid wants to average just 10 carries per game as a starting tailback. Then again, what coaching staff wouldn’t LOVE to have a nearly-mint condition starting lineup as the league playoffs and state tournament near. No, the Buffanblu are not a lock for the state tourney, but with so few games and so much practice time, it’s a dream scenario for some coaches. Especially with the offense executing without hardly a flaw.
5. Kesi Ah-Hoy, Kahuku, 6-1, 192, So. >> Pupule rating: 94
∆∆ vs #10 Kapolei Aug 15 rush 12-97, TD (38) rec 2-69 KR 94-yd TD
∆∆ vs Waipahu Aug 22 rush 3-23 rec 2-26
∆∆ vs McKinley (Ticky) Aug 29 rush 9-115, 3 TD (41,18,12) rec 1-20
∆∆ @ Castle Sept 12 rush 7-37, 2 TD (2,3) rec 2-46 1-2-0-40, TD
∆∆ @ Kaiser Sept 19 rush 16-74, 2 FL rec 0-0
∆∆ vs #4 Leilehua Sept 27 rush 14-2 rec 1-11 3-3-0-42
∆∆ Total rush 61-348, 6 TD; 5.7 YPC; 58 YPG
rec 7-161
KR – TD
Pass – TD
Extra point: Implementing a new offense wasn’t going to change Ah-Hoy’s role as a RB, in theory. But with the offense struggling in recent weeks — seven turnovers against Kaiser and 80 total yards against Leilehua — the Red Raiders have tinkered with Ah-Hoy at QB. That’s a move that I saw work in the BIIF two decades ago. Honokaa moved shifty RB Davin “Taich” Alip to QB after an 0-3 start, and the Dragons proceeded to nearly run the table. All Alip had to do was roll out, pump fake a couple of times and chew up big yardage, move the chains. It won’t be so simple for Ah-Hoy in that role against elite OIA defenses. Or maybe it will.
6. (tie) Terell Johnson, Campbell >> Pupule rating: 92
6-0, 200, Jr.
∆∆ vs Castle Aug 15 rush 11-148 yards, TD (70)
∆∆ vs Moanalua Aug 22 rush 18-127, 2 TD (5,49) rec 1-6
∆∆ vs Kailua Sept 5 rush 9-5 rec 3-31, TD (10)
∆∆ @ Kapolei Sept 12 rush 15-39 rec 2-9
∆∆ vs #2 Mililani Sept 19 rush 14-143, 2 TD (35,41) rec 1-11
∆∆ @ Aiea Sept 27 rush 14-31 rec 0-0
∆∆ Total rush 81-593, 5 TD; 7.3 YPC; 98.8 YPG
rec 7-67, TD
Extra point: When Johnson hits the hole at full acceleration, there may not be a better breakaway ballcarrier in the islands.
6. (tie) K.J. Pascua, ‘Iolani >> Pupule rating: 92
5-5, 157, So.
∆∆ vs Mino Jiyu (Japan) Aug 16 rush 15-120, 2 TD (1,2) rec 0-0
∆∆ vs Damien Aug 29 rush 23-132, TD (8) rec 1-39

∆∆ vs St Francis (Aloha) Sept 20 rush 21-190, 5 TD (39,19,3,7,7) rec 0-0
∆∆ @ #1 Punahou Sept 27 rush 15-64, 2 TD (2,14), 2-pt run rec 0-0
∆∆ Total rush 91-587, 10 TD; 6.5 YPC; 117.4 YPG
2-pt run
rec 1-39
Extra point: It’s been quite a debut season for the sophomore, but he seems to be holding up after 91 carries in five games. If there’s one consolation for D-II teams in the ILH, they normally aren’t scheduled to face D-I teams in back-to-back weeks.
8. (tie) Kaulana Apelu, Kamehameha >> Pupule rating: 91 (injured)
5-10, 185, Sr.
∆∆ @ Del Oro (Calif.) Aug 29 rush 10-79 rec 3-42 (INJ – knee)
Extra point: After losing his junior season to injury, he came into the fall prepared for a potential championship run. In less than a full game, he accumulated more than 100 yards against one of the CIF’s top teams on the road, averaging nearly 8 yards per carry. We’ll never know what #13 would’ve done with a healthy, full season. He was explosive, tough and promising as a sophomore two years ago. My guess is that Apelu would’ve had a 1,000-yard season. Coach Cosbie thinks Apelu will rebound and play at the next level. In time, there’s no doubt it can happen.
8. (tie) Ace Faumui, Kalani >> Pupule rating: 91
∆∆ vs Waialua Aug 16 rush 0-0
∆∆ @ Kalaheo (Kailua field) Aug 23 rush 0-0
∆∆ vs Anuenue (Kaiser Stadium) Aug 29 rush 8-108, 4 TD (50, 6, 2, 11), 2-pt run rec 0-0
∆∆ @ Roosevelt Sept 5 rush 14-151, TD rec 2-(-10)
∆∆ vs Radford (Kaiser Stadium) Sept 12 rush 6-8 rec 3-49
∆∆ vs Kaimuki (Kaiser Stadium) Sept 20 rush 25-180, TD (15) rec 4-8
∆∆ Total rush 47-439, 6 TD; 9.3 YPC; 109.8 YPG
rec 6-(-2)
Extra point: He’s learning on the job, so to speak, a linebacker giving his team what it needs — a straight-ahead, chain-moving producer. At the D-II level, he drags tacklers and his yards-after-contact, simply phenomenal. For now, Kalani’s fly sweeps are enough to keep defenses somewhat honest, but I wonder how fresh Faumui will be by the playoffs.
10. (tie) Makaila Haina-Horswill, Nanakuli >> Pupule rating: 90

∆∆ vs Kalaheo Aug 16 rush 16-160, 2 TD rec 0-0

∆∆ Total rush 69-693, 8 TD; 10 YPC; 115.5 YPG

Extra point: Storybook ending to the Nanakuli-Pearl City game as Haina-Horswill scored three second-half TDs to give his team the lead, then came up with the fumble with 31 seconds left to end the Chargers’ final drive.
10. (tie) Keenan Luis, Baldwin >> Pupule rating: 90

Extra point: Tremendously versatile, great hands, great feet, comfortable in open space and traffic.
10. (tie) Jahred Silofau, Saint Louis >> Pupule rating: 90
5-8, 190, So.
∆∆ vs Mililani Aug 16 DNP
∆∆ vs St. John Bosco (Calif) Aug 22 rush 3-28 rec 0-0
∆∆ vs #1 Punahou (Aloha) Aug 29 DNP
∆∆ vs Pac-Five (Aloha) Sept 5 rush 2-13, TD (4) rec 0-0
∆∆ @ ‘Iolani Sept 13 rush 13-101, TD (20) rec 0-0
∆∆ vs #4 Kamehameha (Aloha) Sept 20 rush 20-152, TD (3) rec 0-0
∆∆ vs St Francis (Aloha) Sept 27 rush 3-32, TD (4) rec 0-0
∆∆ Total rush 41-336, 4 TD; 8.2 YPC; 67.2 YPG
Extra point: The Crusaders used four RBs in the blowout win over St. Francis. It would be fun to see what Silofau would do with a minimum of 10 carries against every opponent, but saving him for the rest of the schedule is a wise move.
10. (tie) Tristin Spikes, Hilo >> Pupule rating: 90
5-8, 175, Sr.
∆∆ vs Waiakea (Wong) Aug 16 rush 12-112, no other stats available
∆∆ vs Hawaii Prep (Wong) Aug 30 rush 9-98, TD rec 3-63, TD
∆∆ vs KS-Hawaii (Wong) Sept 5 rush 25-114, TD rec 0-0
∆∆ @ Honokaa Sept 12
∆∆ @ Kealakehe Sept 20 rush 16-25 rec 2-15
Extra point: Have some missing statistics to gather, but after seeing him play last year (against Campbell), he’s a physical, explosive back. The lack of a consistent passing game puts a little more of the burden on Spikes, but he thrives on it.
15. (tie) Jordan Bayudan, Kamehameha >> Pupule rating: 89
∆∆ St. Francis Sept 5 rush 11-79, TD (32) rec 0-0
∆∆ vs Damien Sept 11 rush 10-65, 3 TD (7,2,1) rec 2-10

∆∆ Total rush 34-310, 7 TD; 9.1 YPC; 77.5 YPG
rec 3-13
Extra point: Light load for Bayudan against the Wolfpack, but it’s tough to beat two TDs in two carries.
15. (tie) Challen Faamatau, Farrington >> Pupule rating: 89
5-10, 183, So.
∆∆ vs Waipahu (Aloha) Aug 16 rush 5-28 rec 1-6
∆∆ vs #9 Kapolei (Ticky) Aug 23 rush 15-68 rec 0-0

∆∆ @ Kailua Sept 12 rush 5-30 rec 2-25, TD (5)
∆∆ @ #2 Mililani Sept 27 rush 6-49, TD (9) rec 0-0
∆∆ Total rush 54-376, 4 TD; 6.9 YPC; 62.7 YPG
rec 7-91, TD; 13 YPR; 15.3 YPG
Extra point: The sophomore has been effective when used, in a similar role to that of Austin May at Campbell. At some point, maybe, the Governors and Sabers will employ their two best running backs at the same time on some plays. Faamatau’s ability to catch the ball could set up some interesting wrinkles when he’s on the field with Mamiya.
15. (tie) Daniel Kelley, Maui >> Pupule rating: 89
5-7, 200, Jr.
∆∆ vs Kealakehe (WMS) Aug 15 rush 28-216, TD
∆∆ vs KS-Maui (WMS) Aug 21 rush 14-150, 2 TD
∆∆ vs Baldwin (WMS) Aug 29 rush 10-50, TD
∆∆ vs #9 Lahainaluna (WMS) Sept 13 rush 10-38
∆∆ vs King Kekaulike (WMS) Sept 20 rush 6-64, TD (33) rec 0-0
∆∆ Total rush 68-518, 5 TD; 7.6 YPC; 103.6 YPG
Extra point: After a huge season-opening performance against Kealakehe, his workload has diminished due to the talented corps of runners at Maui. That’s what works best for the team, but it’s nice for the Sabers to know that Kelley can handle a big workload if necessary.
15. (tie) Sean Noda, Kaimuki >> Pupule rating: 89
5-5, 140, Sr.
∆∆ vs Anuenue (Kaiser Stadium) Aug 23 rush 14-152, 3 TD (6,9,56) rec 2-16

∆∆ @ Waialua Sept 26 rush 18-76 rec 2-27
∆∆ Total rush 75-454, 4 TD

KR – TD
Extra point: Noda continues to move forward, playing both ways, full Ironman mode. This, despite another heartbreaking loss. Pound for pound, one of the toughest, most resilient players in the state.
15. Ikaika Piceno, Leilehua >> Pupule rating: 89
5-8, 185, Sr.

Extra point: It’s a down season for the Red Raiders, but Balisacan has put up some solid numbers.
20. (tie) Onosai Emelio, Maui >> Pupule rating: 88

∆∆ vs Kealakehe (WMS) Aug 15 DNP

∆∆ Total rush 33-247, 5 TD; 7.5 YPC; 61.8 YPG
Extra point: Tough for any of the talented Maui running backs to break out, but that depth is what makes their offense that much tougher to stop.

Extra point: He’s as fluid and decisive a runner as I’ve seen this season, just happens to share the backfield with an exceptional talent in Terell Johnson.

3. Jordan Ross, ‘Iolani, 5-8, 164, Jr. >> Pupule rating: 88
SUMMARY
K.J. Pascua (‘Iolani) is a name that ILH watchers knew about, but to the rest of the world, he’s a surprise, especially since we expected Jordan Ross to be the starting RB. Pascua is a solid, no-frills chain mover. He and backup Storm Lotomau have very little wasted motion hitting the hole, and they’re big reasons why the Raiders are successful running the ball. Again. Dominic Maneafaiga (Nanakuli) and Jahred Silofau (Saint Louis) are two more impressive backs Maneafaiga gets to showcase his pass catching skills often in the Chargers’ offense, a natural, instinctive playmaker who can slither through traffic. Silofau is only a sophomore and is making the most of his opportunity in a crowded Crusaders backfield.
The cream of the crop right now in terms of talent and numbers is Vavae Malepeai. Of the top five backs, he is arguably the best pure I-formation style back, though he carries the ball out of pistol and shotgun handoffs, too. His past two games are more reminiscent of last year’s 1,375-yard, 20-TD season. He averaged 25.5 carries and 172 yards (and three TDs) in wins over Campbell and Farrington. Having relatively fresh legs coming into that two-game stretch helped. If he maintained that level of production over a 12-game schedule, Malepeai would rush for 2,064 yards on 306 carries with 36 TDs. The beating his body would take, well, that might not be worthwhile. I don’t expect defenses to let Malepeai get 25 carries per game, but if it happens, health and durability will certainly be a concern for the junior.
