It could be the true state semifinal.
The top four teams in the Star-Advertiser’s girls volleyball poll will play each other tonight when No. 1 Kamehameha visits No. 2 Punahou for a conference match and No. 3 ‘Iolani travels to meet No. 4 Moanalua in a benefit.
The ILH only gets two teams into the state tournament, often leaving ‘Iolani out. The Raiders have not played in the tournament since 2007, the last time their league was awarded three berths. Fittingly, all three made the final four that year, and Punahou and Kamehameha have faced each other in every state championship match since 2003.
Those two programs will face each other three times in the regular season, tangling on Oct. 4 and Oct. 18 after Thursday night’s battle.
‘Iolani makes the rare trip to Moanalua for the “Spike for the Cause” benefit for Moanalua teacher Alyson Rod and her fight against cancer. The action begins at 5 p.m. with both schools’ white teams playing, followed by junior varsity and varsity.
Na Menehune saw ‘Iolani at the Ann Kang tournament to begin the season, but they did not play each other. Moanalua did play ‘Iolani II, sweeping it 25-21, 25-22 on its way to a fifth-place finish. Punahou won the tournament and ‘Iolani took second in its pool.
