Not much has changed over the summer in ILH swimming.
Punahou’s Jasmine Mau, Kamehameha’s Ryan Stack and Pac-Five’s Lena Hayakawa picked up right where they left off from last year’s state championships with good showings in the first ILH regular-season meet of the year at Kamehameha.
Stack earned three gold medals at last year’s state championships in addition to a team gold. Hayakawa matched him with three and a team championship while Mau took two golds.
Mau won the 100 free by three seconds over Kamehameha freshman Payton Bosque with a time of 52.79 seconds. Bosque was third at the turn but overtook teammate Madison Kauahi. Mau also took the 50 free in 24.18, beating fellow Buffanblu senior Roxy Kiessling by a second. Punahou freshman Lia Foster was third in 25.38.
It wasn’t all gold for Mau, though, as she swam the second leg in the 400 free but Punahou lost by six seconds to host Kamehameha’s team of Kiana Yamashiro, Bosque, Hiilani Hopkins and Madison Kauahi. Mau swam with three freshman: Foster, Cameron Lyon and Hailey Sonson while Kamehameha had two newcomers in Bosque and Hopkins.
Stack excelled in every event he tried, helping the Warriors to two relay wins in addition to his two individual victories. Stack combined with senior Colin-James Fellezs, junior Kanoa Kaleoaloha and junior David Kea to take the 200 medley relay by a second over a young Punahou team that surrounded senior Zack Woo with two sophomores and a freshman.
Stack then entered the water to dominate the 100 backstroke, beating Punahou sophomore Kekoa Vieira by three seconds with a time of 53.55. He was just as good in the 100 free, covering the distance in 47.11 to beat Punahou junior Sam Sutherland‘s 49.38.
Stack wrapped up the first meet of the year by propelling Kamehameha to a win in the 400 free relay, teaming with Fellezs, Kaleoaloha and freshman Kupaa Naone to beat Pac-Five by a full eight seconds. The Warriors clocked a time of 3:16.46.
Hayakawa, a junior who helped the Wolf Pack to last year’s state title, was the only girl under a minute in the 100 fly, swimming a 59.28 to beat teammate Michaela Yamashita‘s 1:00.31. She won the 200 free over another teammate from last year’s stacked team, swimming a 1:56.13 to beat fellow junior Rebecca Walton‘s 1:58.02.
Hayakawa was not so successful in the relays, with her team finishing second in both of them that she entered. She led off the 200 free relay and was followed by Gayla McQuaid, Hannah Parkin and Walton but they could only muster a 1:44.11 to lose to Punahou’s 1:43.78. The Buffanblu entered freshman Kelly Fricke, sophomore Kara Machida, freshman Leia Deer and freshman Maddie Balish in the event, getting a time of 1:43.78.
Punahou beat Hayakawa and the Wolfpack in the 200 medley relay as well, with Katie Woo, Madison Meister, Kayla Rask and Kiessling covering the distance in 1:56.82. Parkin, Tahnijo Kakazu and Walton joined Hayakawa in registering a time of 1:57.63.
Pac-Five anchor Summer Harrison is recovering from an injury and did not swim yesterday
