The Farrington High School community has drawn closer together through the heartbreaking disappearance of Farrington football player Dayne Ortiz.
The cornerback was part of a defensive unit that became one of the best in the state. Coach Randall Okimoto calls Ortiz one of the team’s most improved players.
But Ortiz was lost at sea on Saturday while fishing with his family at Mokuleia Beach. He was on a kayak when rough waters capsized it, and he has not been seen since despite extensive searches.
The Governors had played in the OIA Red championship game just one night before the tragedy. On Facebook, teammates are still holding on to hope, and friends from other teams and communities have shown vast support with prayers and comments. The team visited the site to support the Ortiz ohana on Sunday.
These photos were taken by Linda Fehoko, mother of Farrington defensive lineman Breiden Fehoko. With a few words, Breiden was brief, yet poignant.
“We aren’t teammates. We are brothers.”
