Kahuku was in a rare role as the underdog, a young, talented team that had won five OIA Red East games in a row before falling to Farrington.
The Red Raiders won their playoff game last week, but on Thursday night, Mililani proved to be too skilled, too deep and too sharp in a 37-22 win. Even with linebacker/fullback Dayton Furuta out for a second game in a row, the Trojans didn’t miss a beat.
It was another big game for sophomore running back Vavae Malepeai and an outstanding offensive line.
Kahuku sometimes looked the part of an inexperienced, mistake-prone team. Sometimes, they looked like a power running squad, especially with Soli Afalava at tailback and Polikapo Liua Jr. at fullback.
The state tourney is still in grasp for Kahuku, which will play Campbell next week for third place and the last remaining state-tournament berth.
