Mililani junior Jakob Dewald won his second race in a row to claim the OIA Western Division championship on Saturday at Pearl City.
Dewald cruised through the course with a 5:22 average mile for a time of 16 minutes, 6.9 seconds to beat Radford’s Carlos Rodriguez by nearly 30 seconds. It was the third runner-up finish of the season for Rodriguez, who clocked a 16:33.59. Jordan Onkst of Campbell was third in 16:51.55, but he still had a little something Dewald and Rodriguez did not.
Onkst led the Sabers to a tie with Pearl City for the team title with 40 points each. The Sabers had four runners in the top 10, with Jeremy Ephriam (7th), Alec Bell (8th) and John-Pau Putegnat (10th) joining Onkst. Triston Quitugua, Shazer Valeriano and Jacob Hirsch finished in the 12th through 14th spots for the Sabers, but only Quitugua scored.
Pearl City also had four runners in the top 10, with Danson Honda taking fourth, Chase Arguelles finishing fifth, Paul Enriguez coming in sixth and Matthew Iwane placing ninth.
Dewald’s time was a second slower than the time he had on the same course on Sept. 14 and was the fourth-fastest performance by an OIA boy this year.
Makai Clemons of Kalaheo has the fastest time this season, but he didn’t need to threaten it on Saturday.
Clemons, who ran a 15:25.34 at Kualoa Ranch on Sept. 21, ran a 16:18.19 on a slower course at Central Oahu Regional Park on Saturday to win the OIA Eastern Division championship.
It was the third win of the season for Clemons, but his first in three weeks. He currently holds five of the 10 fastest times in the OIA this season. He finished second to Toshi Kosins of Kalani in last year’s JV championship.
Teammate Pierce Humble finished second at CORP, 32 seconds behind Clemons. Eric Miyauchi of Moanalua was third in 17:08.67.
Kalaheo won the team title easily with 35 points to Moanalua’s 51. Hayden Morgan (8th), Jake Feyedelem (9th) and Shaun Cashen (17th) also scored for the Mustangs.
Shigemasa, Schell take championships
Pearl City’s Maile Shigemasa has been one of the top runners in the West all season but never earned a win for it until Saturday.
Shigemasa ran her home course in 19:25.70 to beat Leilehua’s Mary Eccles by four seconds to win the OIA Western Division Championship.
Shigemasa took third in the West Championships last year.
Shigemasa came in second place in two races during the regular season and was the top OIA female finisher with a sixth-place at Kaiser, but always finished behind Mililani sophomore Vanessa Roybal. Roybal won the JV race on Saturday, allowing Shigemasa to scoop us the championship.
Erika Eifler of Leilehua took third in the varsity race, combining with Eccles to give the Mules the team title with 36 points to Radford’s 44.
Sophomore Amber Miya (6th), freshman Jena Brittain (10th) and junior Danielle Martinez (16th) scored for Leilehua, but Lauren Martinez (17th) pushed them to those heights.
Lina Schell of Kaiser won the East title at CORP by 13 seconds over Kalaheo’s Percie Lyons.
Schell ran the slow course in 20:01.44 to break the tape first and Lyons ran it in 20:14.22. It was Schell’s second win of the season, but she was the top OIA girl at Kualoa Ranch.
Kaiser junior Erika Schell was third in 20:18.39, but the Cougars lost out to the Mustangs for the team title.
In addition to Lyons, Kalaheo got a fourth-place effort from Madison Holzner, a fifth-pace finish by Sarah Frick, seventh place from Madison Norville and 14th from Mayumi Ishikawa.
Both schools only had five runners entered in the race.
The OIA will compete in Saturday’s meet at Punahou before the OIA championships are held Oct. 19 at Central Oahu Regional Park.
