How high can Campbell’s Hurd go?

Campbell’s quarterback is on the verge of the unheard of.

Isaac Hurd takes the No. 6 Sabers to Mililani to face the No. 4 Trojans on Saturday in an OIA West showdown.

For Miliani’s tough defense, the task is simple.

Contain Hurd, and you have a good shot. Let him run and throw at will, and it might be a long night. Hurd not only has led Campbell in passing in each game this year but also has led the Sabers in rushing three times in five games.

His passing high is 271 yards last week against Waianae, and he has rushed for more than 70 yards twice. So it is not out of the realm of possibility that one of these weeks Hurd is going to put it all together and threaten one of the rarest feats in high school football on Oahu: 300 yards passing and 100 yards rushing in a single game.

The feat has been accomplished only twice on this island since 1973, by Kaiser quarterback B.J. Bernard in a 50-31 win over Kalani in 2000, when Bernard threw for 307 yards and ran for 130. He tossed five touchdown passes in that game, and closed out the first half with a touchdown run on an 89-yard draw play.

Perhaps even more impressive, Castle’s Joel Botelho destroyed Waianae 55-35 in 2001, throwing for 305 yards and rushing for 150. He had two touchdown passes and one touchdown run in the preseason game.

Working to Hurd’s advantage is coach Amosa Amosa‘s variation of the run-and-shoot, which has evolved into a nightmare for defensive coordinators. The offense began clicking for real last year when Justin Tago-Sue went for 200 passing and 75 rushing twice and may have had more if not for Hurd taking a few series from him.

It seems those series paid off, as Hurd is running the offense like a machine. The Sabers are averaging 30.2 points per game this year, their most since Amosa’s debut as coach when they put up 30.3 and won the OIA White.

It is probably out of the question for Hurd to reach those heights on Saturday against Miliani, but the Sabers still have Waipahu and Kapolei on the regular-season schedule.

Other dual threats who could threaten Bernard are Mana Kaahanui of Aiea, if he gets back under center, Syles Choy of Damien and Kekoa Kaluhiokalani of Waianae.
