Pearl City a nice place for a run

Mililani’s Vanessa Roybal and Kalaheo’s Makai Clemons put down Oahu’s fastest times of the cross-country season on Saturday at Pearl City.

Roybal, who was running as a JV runner, blazed through the three miles in 19 minutes, six seconds to dust the field. She already held the top time on Oahu this season, clocking a 19:45 in another win at Aiea on Aug. 31.

Maile Shigemasa of Pearl City became Oahu’s third girl to break 20 minutes on her fast home course, running a 19:54 to finish well behind Roybal. ‘Iolani’s Amanda Beaman is the only other girl to break 20 minutes, hitting a 19:36.33 at Kaiser a week ago.

Lina Schell of Kaiser won the OIA girls race at Campbell with a 20:03 and Mary Eccles of Leilehua won the race at Kailua in 20:43.4. Kailey Totherow of Punahou won the ILH’s race at Kamehameha with a 22:23.90.

Clemons fastest in OIA

Kalaheo’s Clemons enjoyed the flat, mostly-paved course at Pearl City as well, becoming the first Oahu runner to break 16 minutes with a time of 15:45. Clemons’ previous low was a 16:12 at Radford on Sept. 1 and he has three of the top five times in the OIA. The other two marks were set on the Pearl City course, with Jacob Dewald running a 16:08 to finish second and put up the second-fastest score in the league so far.

OIA winners at other, slower sites were Toshi Kosins of Kalani with a 16:24 at Kailua (the fourth-fastest OIA time this year) and Jordan Onkst of Campbell with a 16:47 on his home course. Davis Kaahanui of Kamehameha predictably won the ILH race on his home course on Saturday, tackling the hilly terrain in 18:26.05, two minutes slower than his time a week before at Kaiser.

Both leagues will be running in the ‘Iolani Invitational at Kualoa Ranch on Saturday with intermediate races scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. and varsity at 4:30.
