Max Look scored on a 49-yard punt return as the Raiders took a 28-0 lead into halftime in the first varsity football game between the two schools.
The Raiders got an early touchdown pass from Easton Tsubata, then Jordan Ross sprinted down the left sideline for a 50-yard scoring run.
Look’s punt return to paydirt gave the home team a 21-0 lead with 2:55 left in the opening quarter.
Running back Brent Tonaki’s 1-yard run up the middle opened the lead to 28-0 with 10:37 left in the second quarter.
The Saints used multiple formations in the first quarter, including a four-wide, shotgun look, but stuck to a pistol set with three backfield blockers in the second quarter. That smashmouth approach, with quarterback Ranan Mamiya doing most of the ballcarrying, took St. Francis to the 1-yard line with seven seconds left in the half. But Mamiya was whistled for intentional grounding — he rifled the ball at the line of scrimmage instead of spiking it — and an illegal procedure penalty set the Saints back.
On the next play, ‘Iolani safety J.T. Los Banos picked off a pass by Mamiya and returned it to midfield as the half closed.
5:22 p.m.
Ross sat for a chunk of the first half, but scored on a 6-yard touchdown with 8:06 left in the third quarter to give ‘Iolani a 35-0 lead. From there, the running clock was in play.
St. Francis lost defensive back/wide receiver Taylor Wong-Monette to a shoulder injury in the second half. They were already playing without starting quarterback Blaze Umiamaka (shoulder).
