Forty-two players, nine innings, one game.
The second annual Chace Numata Senior All-Star Game begins at 1 p.m. on Monday — Memorial Day — at Joey Desa Field. Many of the top seniors from across the 50th state are on the rosters of the of the Hawaiian Stars and Aloha Stars, coordinated once again by Eric Tokunaga.
Among the prominent names on the field will be Nu‘u Contrades and Aiva Arquette of Saint Louis, Dylan Honda and Kedren Kinzie of state champion Waiakea, and Wehiwa Aloy of state runner-up Baldwin.
Tokunaga, a former Hawaii (and College World Series) shortstop, longtime scout and currently head coach at Farrington, has organized all-star games for decades going back to the Sugar Mill Classic at Hans L’Orange Park.
Coaches for the Aloha Stars are Pal Eldredge, Dave “Boy” Eldredge, Duane Eldredge and Brian Souza. Coaching the Hawaiian Stars are Lenn Sakata, Derek Tatsuno, Chester Wilson and Galen Kitamura.
Prior to the game, the Chace Numata Pop Time Showdown sponsored by SportStan Hawaii will begin at 12:15. The catcher with the fastest “pop time” from home plate to second base will win a new catcher’s glove.
One of the favorites to win the catchers’ contest is Washington Huskies signee Beau Sylvester.
“He’s a big dog. If he goes into the right organization, he can develop into someone special,” Tokunaga said of the Kamehameha catcher. “He’s better off if you just let him play without restraints.”
Numata, a Pearl City standout, and was drafted in the 14th round of the 2010 MLB Draft by the Philadelphia Phillies. He died in 2019 after a skateboarding accident. At the time, he was a catcher for the Erie SeaWolves, the Detroit Tigers AA farm team in Pennsylvania. Numata’s organs were donated and saved five lives.
