Long ago, in another space and time, a young football player named Jason Mariteragi landed a varsity football team.
Young Mariteragi wafs a freshman quarterback.
“We brought him up to varsity,” Kahuku coach Sterling Carvalho said. “He was 120 pounds.”
On Thursday night, all the promise of the humble field general came to fruition. Mariteragi, who suffered a midseason injury and returned only two weeks ago, was nearly flawless in Kahuku’s stunningly lopsided 49-14 victory over Saint Louis for the Open Division state championship.
“I just gained more experience. I got an amazing O-line, many weapons,” said Mariteragi, who was 10-for-13 with 186 passing yards and three touchdowns.
Most importantly: zero turnovers.
The twitchy dual threat also ran for 30 yards on six carries, including a 21-yard jaunt to set up a TD. Mariteragi was at another level after years of dreaming and hoping for his chance.
“Nearly perfect. That’s senior leadership. That’s four years of varsity football. It showed tonight,” Carvalho said. “He was poised. Nothing really rattled him.”
Versatile defensive and offensive playmaker Liona Lefau knew Mariteragi was ready.
“That’s the best you could see a quarterback play right there. We honestly believe we have the quarterback the state. We believed that from the start to the finish even when he was down (with injury), we knew we had him. We trusted in him. He was our guy from the start to the end,” Lefau said. “He played a wonderful game today.”

Kahuku spent every morning this week in film sessions, studying Saint Louis’ tendencies on both sides of the ball. Mariteragi didn’t have a designed run, but his escapability forced the Crusaders to account for him, which opened up the offense for Kainoa Carvalho, who finished with six receptions and 135 yards with two TDs, both in the third quarter.
“Obviously, we’re going to make some mistakes and miss reads here and there, but the execution, knowing where the ball should be, being smart with the ball, knowing when to scramble,” coach Carvalho said. “When (Mariteragi) went to an empty set, the middle’s going to be wide open to find a crease and he was running for a lot of yards in the beginning. They knew the game plan and they executed it.”
St. Louis should of did what cambell did to kAhuku mainly on defense…..14-0 through out the whole game and into the 4 th quarter

Both teams had stud players leave for the mainland because of uncertainty that a season was even possible. That was the only chance Kahuku and the rest of the schools had to dethrone STL. STL will regroup and take it all next year, consider this year a gift to all.
Guarantee the HBO documentary will be a success. Small rural town David football team beating goliaths. In an age of Maxprep, recruited HS catholic prep teams an old school, rural, one horse town doing it the old fashion way. Community, homegrown hard working boys. No malls, no Gamestop, no fancy city, just a dusty field and a football.
Congrats to Kahuku, they won all phases – Off/Def/Special Teams. Overall my son had a great football career at the Lou: pulled up to practice with the 2018 State Champs, played on the 2019 State Champs team and finished as runner up his Sr season. Now off to play college football. Be Safeamd Happy Holidays!
Akana can stay where he is, we won 25+ OIA championships and our fair share of state championships without him, lots of underclassmen waiting for their turn….TOO MEKE hit it on the head….this is what happens when talent Stays home, its not like the kid was struggling for exposure, before this season he was already super talented and highly recruited….. he doesn’t need the Red Raiders and the Red Raiders don’t need him…..stay where you are and do your thing
Congratulations to Kahuku, no doubt about that this year, can’t win every year, sooner or later you will lose, but still a good but very long season for the Crusaders, hopefully next year will be a normal year where we go back to the OIA vs.ILH format during the season. North shore let act like we won championship before because we have we came out the victor tonight but there always next year player coaches and fans remember actions and behaviour we take pride in our kids coaches and community humility in victory motivate in defate
Proud of all these kids on both sides dealing with so much. STL just couldn’t overcome such a dissaterous start, including their QB getting concussed on the second play of the game by a cheap shot. In the end though, Kahuku couldn’t hung 60 on us so I don’t think it really mattered. Congrats to RED RAIDERS, well deserved.

If the Kahuku Intermediate and High School continues to engage in the Denationalization and Americanization of Hawaiian Kingdom subjects, that will be noted by the Royal Commission of Inquiry and reported to all of the contracting parties to the Geneva and Hague Conventions, the International Red Cross, and the International Criminal Court. The US District Court in Honolulu is preparing to transform itself into an Article II court, and grant the Hawaiian Kingdom the declaratory and injunctive relief from American laws and American government officials that it is asking the Court for. If the Court rules in the case of Hawaiian Kingdom v Biden et al according to applicable laws, rather than any other-such as political-considerations, it will grant the declaratory and injunctive relief from American laws and American government officials, and the Kahuku Intermediate and High School will be compelled to remove the words in the school’s alma mater hymn that promotes the Denationilization and Americanization of Hawaiian Kingdom subjects, and cease from any and all other forms of Denationilization and Americanization that it is doing. @HI HS FAN Yes he was taken to the hospital after the game with a concussion. It was pretty clear from the replay he was knocked out and had to be helped up onto wobbly legs. Our refs,coaches and trainers need to do a better job protecting these young men no matter the situation or kid/position. Their health is paramount over any outcome in any game. As for saying Kahuku couldn’t score 60, that should have read could’ve scored 60 but auto correct changed it and I didn’t realize. As I said before, my hats off to Kahuku, the better team won handily. Congratulations!
@shmallkine easy I watch the game and the plays and it was the same plays they used on cambell only different is they used kaikai in the backfield for screens and what not trust they were very frustrated against cambell defense If cambell offense was good it would be a different story… fact….we will get them next year congrats to all kAhuku on the win …
Post #17 is an example of so many that can be found on this forum, of commentary on Hawaii Prep World articles about the Kahuku Intermediate and High School Football Team. According to publicly available information, only 57% of the students at Kahuku High perform at a level that could be considered to be proficient for their grade level. If this particular writer is or was a student at Kahuku High, it is very likely that he/she is or was not among the 57% who could perform proficiently at reading. And if a graduate of Kahuku, that’s even worse! If more of the community of Kahuku cared much more about academic performance and success even nearly as much as they seem to care about Kahuku football, that proficiency percentage would be much higher!

Great season Big Red. Many STL supporters were doubting you from the jump attributing your ealry dominance to “lack of competition,” in the OIA. I personally knew your strength when a questionable hit was made on Mariteragi versus Mililani the first game and Big Red responded by turning the score board into an early Christmas Parade Light Show. You could have made the “dirty hit on our QB is why we lost,” excuse. But your young men are just built differently.

If a current or former teacher or principal of the Kahuku Intermediate and High School were to read some of the comments on this forum, surely they cannot be pleased with what they can see! Especially if they are reading comments written by graduates of the school. But the writer of post #24 unwittingly reveals something more-confirmation of what was pointed out in post #21: (if the writer is a Hawaiian Kingdom subject) Denationilization and Americanization, which are accomplished by inculcation, also known as brainwashing.
