With three of the top nine female bowlers in Friday’s Billy Tees/HHSAA State Championships, the Kapolei Hurricanes captured the girls team championship on Friday at Leeward Bowl.
The ‘Canes’ fourth state title is also their first since 2010. Kapolei won its first title in 2003, when Angel Legaspi was in his first stint as head coach. Six years passed by until Kapolei won its second title, in ’09, again under Legaspi. A year later, Brandon Abe was head coach when the Hurricanes won title No. 3.
Since then, Pearl City captured six of the last nine state tournaments. ‘Iolani, which won in ’18 and ’19, finished second on Friday.
Kapolei won the girls team championship with a total of 5,998 pins. ‘Iolani followed with 5,709 and Pearl City placed third with 5,535.
Janae Yockman finished second individually with 1,349 pints (168 average) and is only a sophomore. Senior Chevette Gasper tallied a 1,244 total pin count (155.5 average) and placed seventh. Freshman Jayna Yockman placed ninth with 1,230 pints (153.8 average). Junior Layla Asuncion (1,170, 146.3), senior Dynasty Aweau (1,107, 138.4), senior Waynette Gasper (1,097, 137.1) and senior Courtney Legaspi (1,093, 136.6) rounded out the Hurricane team effort.
“This bunch of kids, they became close like they were sisters,” Legaspi said. “They worked as a team and they carried each other. Whenever one person wasn’t bowling well, another would carry the team.”
