Jon Narimatsu had a history of leading Mid-Pacific to air riflery prominence.
But in the aftermath of a cancelled 2020 season, the Owls resolved to return to the top. On Tuesday, MPI edged Moanalua to win the Civilian Marksmanship Program/HHSAA state championship at Blaisdell Exhibition Hall.
“I’m really happy that the seniors got the opportunity to compete in a state championship. They all have been with the program for all four years of their high school career. All of them are first-time state-tournament attendees,” Narimatsu said.
Mid-Pacific finished with 2,057 points, 24 more than rival Moanalua. Jordan Lampitelli (522 points), Ethan Harrison (519), Colby Fujino (514) and Nathan Loo (502) were the only team with an all-500 point top four.
“I knew they had the capability to do well even though none of them had previous state tournament experience,” Narimatsu said. “I am extremely proud of them.”
This is the fourth boys state title for the Owls, all under Narimatsu. The previous championships were in 2013, ’15 and ’18. Narimatsu also guided the MPI girls to state crowns in ’14 and ’18.
