The “Kalihi Bowl” is usually a scrappy battle between the two behemoth programs less than a mile apart.
The Kapalama area used to feature a great pit stop, Kam Bowl, home of that great ox tail soup and, in my opinion, one of the best burgers and fries ever. Helena’s Hawaiian Food is also a couple of blocks away, as is neighborhood favorite Kamehameha Bakery.
Then you have, of course, Kamehameha Shopping Center, which is busy as ever, it seems. Since Kam Bowl was demolished and McDonald’s was built up across the street, there’s a neverending stream of cars in the drive-through. Starbucks next door is always packed. Kenny’s Restaurant across the parking lot continues to be a magnet. The pork watercress soup at Liu’s Chop Suey is another tasty treat after a game in Kalihi.
But as for this year’s Kalihi Bowl, let’s just say the highlights are one-sided. Kamehameha’s fortress is in lock-down mode. Any transgressors are severely punished. Farrington, with so many new starters on both sides of the ball, has time on its side. If history is any indication, the Govs and their coaching staff will build patiently and peak by season’s end.
For now, however, the Warriors, with their defense, ground-and-pound rushing attack, mobile quarterback and a sage at the helm in Doug Cosbie, are a force in any league.
