The 15th Annual New City Nissan Softball Classic begins on Saturday and concludes with the championship game on Sunday evening at Tiger Softball Stadium.
No spectators will be allowed.
The event began at a time when softball was not quite as prominent as it is now on the high school level. Now, the likes of Jocelyn Alo, the former Campbell slugger, are bashing home runs and making plays for elite college teams nationally.
“When I started this, I had to beg players to play,” said John Uekawa of New City Nissan. “Now, as freshmen, they’re dreaming of playing in this.”
Sixty players were chosen from a list of 122 applicants, he added. All 30 softball programs on Oahu are represented, Uekawa said.
“I don’t get involved at all. Our board selects the players,” said Uekawa, who coached Maryknoll to an ILH championship this spring.
The third-place game and championship game on Sunday will be televised. No spectators will be allowed.
