For a second week in a row, a young harrier made a splash for the ‘Iolani Raiders.
This time, it wasn’t freshman Jolie Nguyen. Raiders seventh grader Logan Pang stunned the field, covering the two-mile course in 12 minutes flat, more than a minute faster than any of the intermediate, junior varsity and varsity competitors from Maryknoll, Sacred Hearts and host ‘Iolani.
Per protocols administered, each school’s intermediate, JV and varsity runners competed as a group without mixing with other teams. Results were compiled after the race to determine order and top finishers.
The second-best time came from ‘Iolani freshman Jaymie Firth (13:06), who led the varsity race. Seniors Aleana Bayman (13:16), Myndee Dyer (13:29), Madeline Dyer (13:48) and Sophia Top (14:03), all of ‘Iolani, were the top five among the varsity.
Malia Healing of ‘Iolani led the JV race with a time of 14:10.
Another seventh grader from ‘Iolani, Kerys Palmer, finished in 13:52.
Nguyen, who had the top girls time at the ‘Iolani/Mid-Pacific meet last week, had a tennis match, according to an ‘Iolani coach. She noted last week that tennis, not cross country, is her first love.
‘Iolani freshman Keane Palmer led all varsity boys with a time of 10:56, outlasting teammate Ashten Akemoto (11:34). Maryknoll senior Austin Chun (11:38) placed third, followed by teammate Peter Lowell (11:40), another freshman. ‘Iolani sophomore Quinn Pascua (11:53) edged Maryknoll senior Matthew Chun (11:55) for fifth place.
Nicolas Moses, an ‘Iolani seventh grader, posted a speedy 12:10 in the intermediate race, followed by eighth-grade teammates Spencer Lyau (12:24), Daniel Arima (12:51) and Ethan Chock (13:14).
Iron Paz Travis of ‘Iolani, a sophomore, led the JV race with a time of 13:06. Reece Shiraishi (13:08), Riley Regan (13:18) and Zack Takeshita (13:20), all of ‘Iolani, followed.
“We saw all the participants giving their best. Athletes, coaches and parents all seem to be embracing the season well,” ‘Iolani girls cross country assistant coach Jonathan Lyau said. “It’s exciting just to see them out there competing and in their school jerseys. We are seeing the emergence of a lot of good, young runners.”
