With only a week to practice, it only makes sense to find a way to get the ball into the hands of your best playmakers.
West coach George Watanabe did just that on this date in 1983, dialing up three reverse plays for Campbell wide receiver Mark Ramos in an 11-8 win in the first Shrine Classic at Aloha Stadium.
Ramos picked up 21 yards on his first reverse, then watched his average plummet on the second because it only covered three yards and his team’s only touchdown. Ramos then lined up as the holder for the extra-point try and jogged untouched into the end zone for an 8-0 lead.
The game was dominated by defense, and Ramos got into that act as well. The 5-foot-8, 160-pound receiver also played defensive back and sealed the game with an interception in front of the end zone.
