On this date in 1990, Danielle Robins of University injured her left knee in a state volleyball semifinal sweep of Kamehameha and had to sit out the championship a few hours later.
Robins had something to cheer about at the end of the evening. Her Junior Rainbows swept top-seeded Hilo 15-13, 15-12 to claim their seventh straight state crown.
“It hurt at first,” Robins said at the time. “But our team worked so hard to get to this point, I just wanted to be with them.”
Robins ended her career with four state titles and intended on playing for UH but learned that her knee needed reconstructive surgery and the eight months of rehab that came with it.
She didn’t play competitive indoor volleyball again until 1995 when she joined Glennie Adams — her high school coach — at Chaminade.
The former Fab 50 player was out for five years.
“I know they’ll be a lot of skeptics out there,” Adams said. “They’ll ask ‘Why Division II and not Division I? I’m positive she could go anywhere she wanted to, but she’s where she is happy.”
Punahou’s boys won the state championship on that side, their 11th in a row.
