On this date in 2003, Mililani traveled to Waianae and did its best impression of Searider football.
The Trojans dominated time of possession — usually Waianae’s forte — to leave the West side with a key 27-20 victory and control of the OIA Red West.
Peter Ranses led the Trojans with 97 yards rushing and quarterback Maka Kahoano threw for 167 yards, 90 of them on seven catches by Darren Smith.
Mililani improved to 7-0 and won its next two games before finding all kinds of trouble at Aloha Stadium. The Trojans lost 20-13 to Kailua in the OIA semifinals and then fell to Farrington 14-6 in the third-place game. That loss forced James Millwood‘s crew to return to Halawa to meet top-ranked Saint Louis at states and the Crusaders rolled 47-12.
Mililani won at Leilehua, Waianae, Pearl City and Castle that year. It went 0-3 at Aloha Stadium.
