Arizona swarms for Roosevelt junior DE Kaeo Akana

After accumulating 23.5 sacks as a sophomore, Kaeo Akana didn’t begin his collection of scholarship offers quickly.

Hawaii became the first to offer Akana in mid-April. With the recent run of interested schools, Arizona became the seventh Division I program to make Akana an offer on Thursday.

Also on Thursday, Arizona made an offer to Punahou junior defensive end/linebacker Tevarua Tafiti, who now has 18 in all.

At 6 feet, 3.5 inches and 205 pounds, Akana is a student of the edge, honing his techniques constantly through the COVID-19 pandemic. He is a defensive end first, but agile and quick at the next level defensively.

“He’s been at outside linebacker in Pylons. He can kind of do both. He’s comfortable. We just let him loose, and he wants to come after the quarterback. He gets antsy,” Roosevelt coach Kui Kahooilihala said. “He’ll learn to play both if that’s his position at the next level. Off the edge, his first move is so quick. His potential, he’s only going to get better, that kid.”

Akana is part of a large contingent of island players planning to compete at the PTP Showcase in Utah at the end of October.
