It’s a dozen scholarship offers now for Saint Louis junior La‘akea Kapoi.
Earlier in the week, the 6-foot-4, 295-pound offensive lineman had a robust seven offers. Then came Southern Utah and Washington State. By Thursday afternoon, Oregon State tossed its hat into the ring.
On Friday, Cal came calling. On Saturday, Colorado joined the party. That’s five offers in the last five days, one on each day.
“The amazing thing is we’ve never gotten juniors that gotten that many offers (before football season),” Saint Louis coach Ron Lee said. “I don’t know what they’re looking at because we haven’t played — that’s what’s amazing. They’re looking at film of last season, I guess. But we haven’t done anything,”
Since Hawaii became the first Division I program to make an offer, five more have come from Pac-12 Conference institutions. Lee believes the mainland competition of last season helped.
“The game against St. Thomas (Aquinas of Florida), I think that helped our whole line. They had guys going to Georgia and guys going to the SEC. Our guys blocked them pretty good,” Lee said. “The other thing our guys do have is a tremendous work ethic. They love it. They’re good students. Smart. And they want to be good in football. Fifteen, 16-year olds, they want to be good. And they’re still growing. They’re still young.”
Kapoi has a 3.5 grade-point average and is penciled in as a returning starter at right tackle for four-time defending state champion Saint Louis.
