Although the HHSAA wasn’t born until 1956, the Hawaii Interscholastic Federation was born out of many of the same ideas.
On this day in 1925, the HIF was formed temporarily to create games in all sports between schools of every island. The first rule it drew up was requiring athletes to be under 21 years of age and restricting them to four seasons.
The organization was given the OK in 1926 and immediately formed a football schedule that included McKinley, Maui, Lahainaluna, Kauai, Hilo, Kona, Kohala and Schofield all traveling to other islands to play regular-season games. Hilo won the organization’s first football title with a 23-0 win over Lahainaluna.
Lahainaluna principal H. Alton Rogers was the first president of the group, he served as Lahainaluna’s principal from 1923 to 1950. He died in 1963 at the age of 78.
