On this day in 2003, everyone had an opinion on classification in prep sports.
HHSAA boss Keith Amemiya announced that he would put up $20,000 to give classification a try for a year and KHNL general manager John Fink said he would match that number in air time for small-school football.
That didn’t go over well with some, including OIA chief Dwight Toyama and Waimea AD Jim Kitamura.
Kitamura teamed up with his girls volleyball coach, Doc Arrington, to present their own proposal that called for four state champions in each sport. Two of them would be public and two of them would contain private schools and they would never merge except in the case of a Prep Bowl-like contest after the champions were crowned.
