MAY 4, 1988: Waianae’s Michael Kato no-hits Kapaa

Ioane Kaluhiokalani played for Waianae's 1988 state tournament team.

On this day in 1988, Michael Kato and Waianae eased into the second round of the state tournament with a no-hitter over five innings.

The Seariders won 4-0 in five innings when the game was called because of rain. The short outing didn’t help Kato in semifinals, though, as he got roughed up by Kamehameha for eight runs on seven hits (including two home runs) before the fourth inning.

The four days of action began at 10 a.m. and didn’t finish until 12:38 because of rain. Punahou and Leilehua started the final game at 10:10 p.m. and it could have been a longer day but the Buffanblu mercy-ruled the Mules.
