Dennis Oda / Star-Advertiser

Sean Milan and Pearl City lost the game, but won the conversation.

On this day in 2013, Milan pitched 10 innings but the Chargers lost to Kailua 2-1 in the OIA Red Quarterfinals.

Surfriders coach Corey Ishigo called it ‘probably the best high school performance I’ve seen as coach in 14 years.’

Milan threw 141 pitches with 10 strikeouts and scattering six hits. Pilipo Kupahu scored the telling run for Kailua in the 12th when the Chargers failed to turn a double play.

Campbell ended up winning the OIA but both Pearl City and Kailua made it to the state tournament along with the Sabers. The Chargers fell 4-3 to Maui in the first round and the Surfriders lost 3-0 to Hilo.

Milan, who was injured in the previous year’s state tournament, threw a scoreless inning and hit a double in the loss.
