APRIL 23, 1969: Charlene Rodenhurst is Kamehameha’s top sprinter ever

Charlene Rodenhurst of Kamehameha tied the 50-yard dash mark of 6.4 seconds in the ILH trials at Punahou.

The speed queen also had the top time in the 100 with an 11.8 clocking. Two JV records were broken, with Juanah Lok of Roosevelt setting a new standard in the shot put and future star Shirleen Miguel tying the long jump record for the Rough Riders.

Rodenhurst matched her times in the finals two days later, winning both events. She matched the feat two weeks later at the state championships. By the time her career was over, Rodenhurst won six gold medals at the state championships. No Kamehameha girl has won even one medal in the 100 meters since, making Rodenhurst the best female sprinter in school history.

While the ILH girls were prancing around Punahou, the OIA boys had their own trials at Radford.

Vern Davies of Kailua set a record in the 120-high hurdles and had the fastest time in the low hurdles as well. Jim Williams of Leilehua broke the record in the triple jump and Kurt Mench of Castle set the pace in the 880 and the mile.
