Larry Khan-Smith is probably best known for his running exploits with the UH football team, but he made his mark on the state as a jumper.
On this day in 1986, the boy who is still perhaps Campbell’s greatest athlete broke OIA records in the triple jump and long jump at Kaiser. By the time he was finished with his senior season, Khan-Smith was all over the HHSAA record books with five gold medals.
>> He repeated in the long jump in 1985 and 1986, only two boys (Anthony Kahoohanohano Davis of Baldwin and Kaenen Akau of KS-Hawaii) have done it since. After he went 23-1 as a senior, no other boy would go over 23 feet for the next nine years.
>> He won the triple jump three years in a row, including a record 48-1 effort as a senior. That record held for 30 years until Kahoohanohano-Davis beat it in 2016. He and Rhani Peters of Kaiser are the only boys to win the event three times.
Khan-Smith went on to star in football at UH, graduating as the program’s career leader in return yardage.
“Shaka” Khan-Smith was Faaaaaast. He was a blur on football field and on track
